How exactly does a fan heatsync work, and should the fan on top blow away from the heatsync or onto it?

The heatsin sits on top of the CPU and since its a good heat CONDUCTER it takwes the heat out of the CPU.

I think its a case to case basis, other set-up would cool better with fan pushing air to the heatsink which is the standard, and other have tried with the fan blowing the opposite direction(pull),

yea, the best way to work it out is to experiment. put it one way, leave it for a couple of hours. then swap the fan round, do exactly the same, and measure the temp both times and compare

Depends how you define "work" but usually its standard to have the fan blow air towards the CPU

You shouldnt need hours to find out A few runs of Prime95 will quickly reveal which route is superior
