Hey guys, my first build has a hiccup...

Hey guys, I recently purchased all this stuff, and put it all together today. After I got everything plugged in and ready to go, I tried to turn it on and nothing happened. I tried a few different power cords, and outlets, but nothing helped. Anyway, I started trying to fire it up with just the motherboard, ram and cpu hooked up, and it seemed to start up. All the motherboard lights turned on and so I started adding other parts, and everything was going well, fans started up and the lights all came on until I plugged in the GPU.

Once the GPU was plugged in, nothing happened again. So I tried again, just the board, ram and cpu; started up. Added the GPU, nothing happened again. If I do try and boot it up with it plugged in, I can hear something try and start up but nothing does, no fans, no lights. So I'm fairly certain it's a GPU problem, but figured I'd ask here before I tried to get it replaced. Could it be a short in the PCI express power cords? So does anyone have any other possibilities? I'd very much appreciate it.

Have you tried both of the slots for the GPU? But otherwise I would say it is a GPU problem do you have another one you could try, doesnt have to be SLI. I have a GeForce GT120 from a stock gateway on my 870A.

But if you can get one and slapp it in there and it works then you will know for sure what it is .

I have tried both slots, both have the same results. I don't have another one, but I was gonna make a run to Best Buy and pick up a cheapo GPU to test out today anyway. Even if that does work, couldn't that still mean it's a PSU problem? I mean, I'm fairly certain it is a GPU problem as well, but I just wanna be sure.

Haha, of course not! It may be my first build, but I've done my fair share of component swapping.
 
My guess would be a bad power supply. Once the card is in, the power pull is killing it. Second guess would be the GPU. But I dont see any reason even if the GPU is bad why the computer would not power up(fans and so on). Thats why my first guess is a dud power supply.

Pretty much overkill.

The one he has should power it (alittle on the small side, but should power it). But I think it could just be a bad supply. Plus I dont really like OCZ power supplies.

I would have got probably a 650W. In a XFX/Silverstone/Corsair/Antec or Seasonic.
