I wanna get a new laptop for my computer science studies and also for some light - medium gaming, not more. Just want it to handle tasks and programming.
I saw this laptop of Lenovo and thought it could be a good use. Any recommendations?

The processor is I7 6700HQ, and 256 ssd.

I've considered this because I'm not very much familiar with lenovo and if it's a good company.
I just know that this specs are really good for it's price.
What do you think?

Thanks!

I'd like to know what the storage solution actually is.. they only say 'up to' but what do you actually get at $699 price point. Also, and this may or may not matter but, the 3165 ac wifi chip they use is only 1x1 meaning it will be limited to a max link speed of 433Mbps..just an FYI

The 950 isn't a particularly great mobile solution, but as you said medium gaming and more for studies, this may not matter to you,.?

Thanks for the reply. no it doesn't matter .. just would like to know how's the computer generally i get the 256 ssd.

And yea, medium gaming, not more

If you get the i7, an SSD, wifi AC, and a dedicated card for $700 thats a decent deal for sure. It seems to be in line with what your needs are!

What do you mean by wifi ac? and btw is lenovo a good company?

It's just the current wifi standard. Just like A, B, G, N...etc before it. All I was getting at is the 3165 is a 1x1 AC wifi chip with a max link speed of 433Mbps. A 7260, for example is a 2x2 meaning it can max at 866Mbps

Yeah, lenovo is decent. I've owned one before, it was a good machine - at the time it was a 6-700 dollar machine too.

I personally prefer Asus or MSI, but you'll be paying more probably

By the way I wanted to ask you about the difference between intel U processors and HQ processors. heard that U processors are crap, is it true? even the i7 7 series ones?

It's not that they are crap, per se, its just that the U series are ultra low power and serve a certain segment. The HQ are a high performance chip with onboard HD graphics.

Just different components for difference usages!

First of all I really want to thank you for the informative replies and so, thanks alot !

And last question, so for someone looking to get a computer with a good cpu who can multi task and process things quickly and also will be good for my programming, should I get the cheaper i7 7200 U or should still go for the HQ?
Games are the last of my priorities.

Thank you again!

No problem, welcome to the forum! Stick around, ask lots of questions, shittalk with bums like myself...its all gravy

Yeah, I didn't even realize that the 7th gens were out and widely available... I'd personally stick with the 6700HQ or similar. My MSI laptop has that chip and its great!! Whether you game much or not, you want a responsive computer and you won't be let down with that one!

Hey, you know what. I actually found a cheaper version of it. Basically the I7-6700HQ computer cost 950 usd. And there's a version with I5-6300HQ that cost 878 usds. What do you say about it ?

Only if you're currently strapping the tower to your back and lugging it to school..then I change my opinion and recommend a chiropractor. Laptops are much lighter and, trust me its way easier to find a carrying case for a laptop than a tower.

That is ultimately your call. Depends on your financial situation, what you want it for..etc.

Despite the fact I bought a 'gaming' notebook this past January, I really don't like nor advocate much for notebooks as they are a giant ripoff in most cases. You pay a premium for portability and the vast majority simply can't touch a gaming/high end desktop.

In regards to your studies, if you can do that with a basic machine and the course don't require any demanding applications or software, then you could go uber cheap on a basic word processing machine.

If you want to game and/or require a bit more juice, I would'nt sacrifice the CPU..especially in a laptop.

Sorry thats not the most clear cut answer but it really depends on a few factors that you would know best.

If you will be gaming, you'd be much better off with a lower end CPU like an i5 and a higher end video card like the 960/970/1060.
