I HAVE A CRAPY P4 1.6 ghz socket 478, and i want to upgrade
would it be better to...

1 replace CPU

2 Replace Motherboard/and CPU like total under $200

and if number one is the best, can someone give me the best 478 chip?

Option 2 is best, but you still could only replace the CPU, but upgrading to LGA 775 is the best option in terms of future upgradability.

Go with the E6300 or E6400 instead.

Also, don't trust ECS.

Yes, stick with a more familar motherboard brand.. and the e4300 is alright in my opinion but seeing as all these c2d prices are gonna drop soon you could get an e6320 for around that much in Q2..

This is a bit over your budget but gives you the C2D you want. The ASUS mobo is much better that an ECS (even their cheap mobos will out do most any ECS or PC Chips board).

Obviously not a C2D (or even Intel), but a good CPU none the less. You will see a big improvement over what you have currently. Gigabyte makes good baords, but if you want there is an ASUS for about the same price.
