I really have no idea what all the mumbo jumbo of the letters mean but im getting a new computer and wanted to know if a Double Layer 16X DVD +/-R/RW drive is any good? does it burn cd's and or dvd's? can i burn music on it or is it just for dvd movies? do u think a 48X Max. CD-ROM Drive / or 48x max. CD-RW / or 16x max. DVD-ROM/ or CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive is better(i dont care about the money just want the better one) thanks in advance i woould appreciate any help
 
Hmmm...

You should definitely go with the DVD+-R Burner. The 16x means it burns at 16 speed which is the fastest currently available for burning DVD+-Rs and DVD+-RWs. Such drives can burn on BOTH DVD+-Rs/RWs and CD-Rs and CD-RWs. There is no need for some other combo drive at all as this can do everything you would need.

ok

i have another question when i want to burn music to a regular cd do i have to buy the 16x speed or can i buy the higher 50+x speed. Also if i burn my music on a dvd will i be able to play it on a regular cd player or just dvd compatable hardware?

You confusing the two. 16x is the highest rated DVD +R media available. but you shouldn't burn faster than 8x anyways (4x is best :)). As far as CDs, depends on what your burning.

For regular data, it don't matter for me. fastest is fine. but for games I burn at 4x also.
 
Summary

16X Max DVD burning speed
48/52 Max CD burning speed

BUT!

Never burn at maximum. On DVDs as Praetor suggests a speed of 2X is most suitable to get a "flawless" copy. On CD-Rs when considering audio you should burn nice and slow (Probably 4x would be my choice). When burning data on a CD-R, a higher speed below 16X should be fine in my personal opinion. Take this as personal preference.
