can you do this over the internet? or somthing

I know at least the admins on most forums (and mods if they are given the authority) can see the IP address of people who post.

Tracking it to their address, would be slightly harder. im assuming you would need to contact the authorities for them to do the trace, unless you have the right software.

Exactly. Most forum platforms like vBulletin can see users IP addresses and web applications also help in tracing the postal address, or it can be obtained from the ISP.

But there are flaws in everything

thats how they do it. u.s. marshall, fbi or cops. trace the ip maybe to comcast then call to see who owns the ip. Spoofers don't work well. (theres still traces). at least enough information for tracking purpose.

According to my brother in law, you can get an exact residential address from an internet connection. He says it's actually not that hard you just have to know how and have support from the internet providers. Years ago all you could get was a general location. With the law using the internet more in recent years, they have made changes in software and servers so they can do just that...see where you are transmitting from. He had training on doing just that when he was in school. He has 3 degrees from the University of Wurzberg Germany (Computer Information Analyst, Computer Science, Computer Programing)

Problem is...7 1/2 years of school and he has not been able to find a job in 2 years since he finished! That sucks Here in Germany the University is free to attend...didn't cost him anything and no student loans to pay.

No joke...completely free So is health care, I pay 10 Euros (about $13) every time we see a medical provider, that's it. My kids go to private schools, that costs some money but well worth the investment
