need some help here again guys... the last time i fixed the stutter on my 4870 512mb card, all i did was leave my computer on overnight and downloaded my digital copy of windows 7. worked fine all week, until yesterday the stutter came back, and how much do you want to bet it'll be gone by monday and back by friday? anyways....i just formatted my partition and am going to reinstall windows 7, im on my backup 32 bit windows 7 right now. but i'm still getting stutter! i now KNOW that it is not the video card and is indeed something else...im guessing ram or mobo, and possibly HDD, but im running on a different HDD and it's still has stutter so no...basically, no stutter when i first start a game, after about 5 mins, it stutters, and it's not like it slowly starts to stutter, it just starts to stutter. and with my card, you can hear the processes it is making while it's under load, and when it stutters, you can hear the sound go away and come back again, every time it stutters. idk if that will be any help but i decided to say so. so im guessing the only thing i can do right now is just try the mobo and the ram but if you guys can point me in the right direction, just let me know, thanx alot guys :)
 
like you can hear the card being used when underload, processing the shaders and what not, it's normal, my friend who has the same card and no problems says he hears it too.

specs:

CPU: Phenom II x4 955 BE
GPUs: sapphire (or diamond, it doesn't say at all) radeon HD 4870 512mb
Sapphire radeon HD 4670 1gb
mobo: MSI 870A-g54
PSU: coolermaster elite 310 460w
RAM: crucial 4gb 1333mhz
 
alright i fixed it lol (i'll be back in a couple days i know it --knock on wood--) MSI has the live update 5 utility for the mobo's and so i dl it and then i dl the updates, and i thought they installed them....nahhhhh, so i finally figured that out, manually flashed the mobo, and we are good :D thanks guys!
 
I can hear my cpu when its processing stuff,are you sure its not your cpu making the noise,it will sound like a bird chirping,even does it when i move my mouse.
 
no it's the video card, i can tell, but it's perfectly normal, i've read up about that the first day i got it, called ati, they said it was normal, it's ok lol. plus it only happens when im running something thats gpu intensive, like counter strike, when i alt + tab out though, the sound stops, then comes back when i go back in. and yes i know when the CPU is making that sound, because the CPU sound is not constant, it's like little pecs here and there especially when under load, sort of like a grinding sound. the GPU on the other hand is constant and sounds sort of like an HDD constantly running, and no, it's not the HDD...just strust me it's fine :), and i fixed my problem anyways so thanks guys!
 
Neither CPU nor the graphics card should be making any noise. They have no moving parts. The only things that should make noise in your computer are the fans and the hard drives when you are reading/writing to them.

Do you mean it is making a whining sound? If so, are you sure it is your graphics card and not your PSU? This is capacitor whine and whilst yes, normal, can indicate a problem. It will happen under load as you mentioned, however the reason it could also be your power supply is that when you are doing something GPU intensive, the graphics card uses more power, putting the power supply under more load as well.

What was causing the issue?
 
Never heard a chipset make a noise except when it burns out with a flash and smoke!!!

Only noises you should hear is hard drive discs, CD/DVDs and fans or some thing going up in smoke if you are unfortunate.
 
A slight hum from the GPU is normal when underload (particularly when overclocked). All my 580's do it.

Normally the fan noise of the card would drown this out.
