Hibernation/Standby Problem on Toshiba Tecra M7

Hi guys.

I haven't been on in a while, because I haven't had many problems with my laptop, although now I do:

My laptop (Toshiba Tecra M7), refuses to hibernate or standby. I can click the button that says "Hibernate/Standby," and the computer will show the screen that says "Preparing to Hibernate/Standby," and it freezes on that screen. I've tried Disk Cleanup, System Restore, and Disk De-fragmentation, and nothing has worked so far. My question to everybody here is: Why would this be happening?

*NOTE*
I'm using Windows XP SP3, and the computer itself is 3 years old.

It could be some random corrupt system file that is freezing it. It could also be some 3rd party application that errors when you try to sleep/hibernate. Try booting in safe mode, and then sleeping/hibernating. If that works, then try disabling whatever background applications you might have running (while in normal mode) and see if that works.

Try PohTayToez idea, but if it doesn't work, I say backup your documents and reinstall the operating system. Did you get SP3 when it was in the Beta stage, or did you get it through Windows update (or when it was released publicly)?
