Hi all, Im no good with the technical side of things but my HP laptop had to go in a while ago after it stopped working completely, this isnt the first time its done it and I was told the first time it had a new motherboard(?) so im assuming this is what they did this time aswell, but ever since its come back sometimes it goes incredibly slow and my antivirus software picks up 'High CPU usage for program:windows explorer' Its really getting on my nerves now and Ive had enough of sending it off for repairs, is there anything I can do? Im so close to just smashing it and buying a new one its annoying me that much! Its getting on a bit now, is it just old and time to scrap it?
thanks in advance!

Hi, just some questions to get us started:

What Anti-Virus is on there?
What version is IE?
What is the model number of your laptop?

Antivirus is norton 360
Internet explorer I haven't got a clue
Model is a dv9646em apparently from the label?
Thanks!

Okay. First things first, back up any files or folders you may need on an external drive or a DVD or something. After that you should:

1) Uninstall Norton and all of its components.
2) Download: MalwareBytes, CCleaner, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Microsoft Security Essentials
3) Install the above programs.

We'll start with CCleaner. This program basically cleans out all the crap from your computer. Temporary files, log files, etc. There will also be a "tools" tab in this program. Go there, and go to the start up tab under it. See all those entries? Those are programs that are set to start with windows. We won't need any of those, so you can go ahead and disable then delete all of them.

Moving on the MalwareBytes. This program is a great tool for finding infections and curing them, much better than anything norton can do. And it's free! Make sure it's fully updated when you do a full scan. Post the resulting log as a reply, please.

Next, the auslogics program. Select the "Defrag and Optimise" option. This might take a while depending on how full your hard drive is, but it should give a good boost in speed when it's done.

Lastly, Microsoft Security Essentials is a great free antivirus. Much better than Norton. Install it and set it up how you like regarding scanning options and such.

Hope this helps.
