I just installed an Antec smartpower 2.0 350W PSU. It is making a very high pitched noise. It only makes the noise when the computer is running. It is not coming from the fans. Is this power supply defective? My previous PSU did not make this noise. Its almost like its the sound of electricity going through it. Any ideas?

If you just it where? online or in a retail store? The only moving parts inside a power supply is the fan blades and fan motor. That's it! Personnally while not having ever heard a noise from the TP models and earlier 300w and 350w Antec supplies over the years the first thing here would be to "return it". Don't even wonder about that. A bad psu gets out once in awhile. It most likely has a bad fan motor there. Get an exchange or refund.

Its not nececairely a Fan.. that PSU might be suffering from an internal short-circuit ( because capasitors can make a high pitching noise too,.. when used well,... err,.. wrong 
) . i would go back to where you bought it, and ask for a other one. especially since its new,. i wouldnt mess around with it, and RMA it

stupid me... yes.. it can be coils, not capasitors. ( capasitors can make noise, but not that loud, Coils can )
Actually, it is the capacitors that whine as well.

like i said.. capasitors can whine.. but not very loud. then they simply blow
You got the second part correct. Congradulations! I've had caps go "BOOM"! and smoke in your face while testing them.
! was the expression some people had when some bad caps let go and the supply was surrounded in smoke! But "Return ASAP" is the one simple term with any new supply with a problem. i had this problem,i threw the PoS out.
I got it all taken care of. I emailed Antec about it last night and I got a reply saying that it should not make any noise like I described. They said they are supposed to be silent except for the normal sound of the fans. There should be no other sounds at all. They said it was defective and I should return it. So any of you that have noise coming from a new PSU you should return it.
So anyway, I returned it to circuit city and got a new one. I took it home and installed it and when I turned it on it worked for about 2 seconds and quit. It never would turn back on after that. So I went back to CC again and returned it and got my money back. That was the only brand they had there and I didnt want another one. I went over to Best buy and guess what brand they sold, Antec!!! I crossed my fingers and bought another one. I guess I got a good one now cause it works and really is silent. Im thinking maybe CC got a batch of bad ones or somthing. My computer seems it is over all more responsive with the Antec PSU. I had 300W el cheapo before this.

Why testing? we have some lovely 40v - 40A PSU's at school.. and those nice big 4700uF Elco's.. you can launch parts of those through the classroom..
I've bought Antecs over the counter at Circuit C. Staples, and other retail office suppliers even Compusa and never once had a bad one. That was probably the one bad one Circuit got in and you found it. At least you didn't wait to return it. It does point out one thing that no matter what brand it is you can still see a defective product at times.

Unfortunately,.. yes. But looking on the bright side, with good branded components, the chanses are smaller, and usually the support is a lot better

The better and higher standard along with the support of customers works out here for me! I have no problems with that at all.

I knew a guy that hooked up a 1F cap to one of those PSUs in a college and left it there. A while later during the next class the cap exploded, destroying the desk and burning the ceiling above it.
Needless to say he was expelled.

well.. charging 47uF's and putting them back into the storage for others to pick them up is much more fun anyway
