High-Pitched Ringing

Hey, everyone.

I've noticed that my motherboard emits a high-pitched ringing when there's CPU and monitor activity. Is this normal or a sign of something breaking down?

By the way, my CPU fan grinds on startup for about a minute or so and then goes away. Could anything overheat in the first minute after startup from inadequate fan RPM?
 
If your CPU fan is shot, you should replace it.

That's probably the cause of the high pitched noise.

If your CPU fan fails, it will cause major issues. LOL
 
The high pitch squeel is probably coil whine coming from your PSU. The CPU activity puts more demand on the power supply which then starts to produce the noise.

That's what I would think would be the first possibility. The CPU fan grinding may be unrelated. Like others said, DEFINITELY REPLACE IT!!! If your PSU isn't handling your components' load, you should replace it ASAP, so that it doesn't fail altogether and pull some of your other components into its grave with it. ;)

Coil whine is caused by resonance in the windings, not by the load put onto the power supply. A certain load may cause the coils to resonate, such as any load between 40-50%, 10-20%, 90-100%, etc. Coils are not all wound exactly the same,and their resonant frequencies will change respectively. Generally coil whine is 100% harmless. However, depending on the quality of the unit, it may be a good idea to replace the power supply. OP: What brand/model power supply is it?

The fan on the cpu heatsink however should be replaced.

Bomberboysk, I couldn't find any labels on the power supply that indicated a particular brand, but I know it's not OEM. It was changed the same time the motherboard was:

I managed to remove the head sink fan, but the heat sink itself doesn't seem to have the common type of latch that pulls with a flat head screwdriver. Would any of you happen to be familiar with removing this type of heat sink?

By the way, would any heat sink fan fit on this, or are there particular mounting types? Mine is held on by 4 plastic clips attached to the heat sink.
 
to remove those heatsinks, you need to turn those pushpins clockwise(maybe counter clockwise, cannot fuly remember)(there may be arrows) then pull up on them.

as far as psu, that appears to be a pretty cheap low end unit, and I would replace it with a good quality one.

Is this type of heatsink fan design reliable?

It's advertised as delivering 10° colder than the Intel counterparts...
