High Resolutions? (In game, and desktop)

What's the point of all of these crazy high resolutions and why/how do people use them? While I'm just browsing the web/watching movies/everything else my computer's resolution is at 1024 by 768. Most people would hate that...from what I hear. I can't stand anything higher...it's just annoying (crazy small font).

As for gaming, I keep the resolutions at 800 by 600, even if my computer can play the game at 1280 by 1024 at 90fps...I'll still keep it at 800 by 600..because I don't notice any difference. For example...the timeshift demo, I kept it at 800 by 600 because (imo) it looks exactly the same as at higher resolutions. I really don't notice any difference....

Is there that much difference (in game and out of game) between 800 by 600 and 1280 by 1024? The obvious answer is yes haha but what's your opinion? Am I the only one that doesn't mind low resolutions? (and Actually prefers them?)

Give me your thoughts.

Many of the old timers in the gaming world still "intentionally" use crts not lcds set to 800x600! So it comes at no surprise there. Here if I run a game it's at the same resolution as the desktop displayed on an lcd. 1280x1024 I even know some people who run 22" displays at 1024x768. They also use reading glasses.

The extra pixels help a lot when doing video/graphic work.

I personally use 1280x1024 just cause i like the feel of the extra space. I have no problem reading the text so it simply gives me more room to work with. I can view a larger part of a webpage without having to scroll. I can fit more windows up at the same time. Things like that.

Gaming, i drop it down to 800x600 just cause thats all my comp can handle.

I wonder the opposite thought about gaming. Why do gamers use lower resolutions? Arent the graphics better n such at higher resolutions?

They're supposed to look way better at higher resolutions....but I personally don't notice any difference.

but if you can get 90 FPS at a high resolution, it doesnt hurt to do it.
and as PC-Eye said, some pro/focused/dedicated gamers still use low resolutions.

On a side note, can you see more ingame with a higher resolution?

EDIT: For fun, im trying out 1024x768 for basic computing (web browsing). Its sorta awkward. Does it improve proformance? I would assume so. If its noticeable, ill have to get used to this.

Don't forget the old time gamers are running crts not lcds. You would see 1024x768 as one of the highest resolutions on a crt while lcds start off with 1024x768 for 14", 15", 17" models and 1280x1024 for 17" and larger. Once a driver is loaded while installing Windows for an lcd Windows will automatically go to 1280x1024 and prompt if you want to keep that setting.

I use my old 17" Sony Trinitron CRT set to 800x600 for when I actually care about winning an online game, so long as I don't need to see anythig that's really teensy (like a sniper, or some dude hiding in a bush). I can get high-end FPS at lower resolutions, and the response time is always 0.

But I like my 1680x1050 Samsung LCD for gaming for enjoyment. HL2 became a real experience at that resolution. The higher resolution makes it easier to spot people at insane distances--damn monitor is 20". It's bigger, clearer, and much sharper.
