High Temps for 4690K OC?

Hi all,

Recently gave my i5-4690K with a single, stock-fanned CM Hyper 212 EVO a small OC. Managed to get a 4.2 GHz OC @ 1.2 V. I have tested using Prime 95 26.6 on small FFT (4 threads) for about 2 hours. The temps never rose above 76 C, averaged about 74.5 C. Also ran AIDA64 stability test for about 2 hours and didn't crash, or ever go higher than 76C, averaged around 71 C.

Aside from all of that before the OC, I was at about 50 C idling (the room is about 21 - 26 C ambient).

The possibility exists that I applied the thermal paste less than professionally, and that could be causing something.

Is there anything wrong with my results here? I'd like to know if it would be worthwhile to try and re-seat it with some fresh paste.

Yeah man..50 is def. high.. I'm also on the 4690K with a 4.4G oc

I'd definitely try to unmount cooler and put some fresh paste on there!!!
 
Just using the stock 212 EVO paste.

So when I go about doing this, should I take the mobo out, or just do it while the tower is standing and take both sides off?
 
You should be able to do it with the side off, but if you're more comfortable unmounting the mobo then have at it.

If you case has a cutout behind the mobo, I'd just remove the cooler, if you don't need to physically remove the board I wouldnt cause myself extra work

EDIT: I'm sure you know this, but make sure to completely clean off all the old crappy from the CPU
 
I have an add-on question. Would upgrading from a CM 212 EVO to a Corsair 110i GTX be worth it? I struggle to think that the Corsair would really reduce the temps enough to allow for any more than 100-300 MHz than the 212 EVO could do. In the mean time, I think I will pick up two new fans, remove the 212, replace the fan/add another, and re-paste.

Eh not really, with the cost difference in the cooler you could have dumped that into an i7.

The 212 you have now isn't functioning properly, if you can get that sorted out then 200-300 MHz is easy pickings.

That said, I have noticed that I managed to make half of my case fans the SP140 model, not the AF. Would going to the AF models noticeably change the temps I usually get? I know that the SP's are usually for constricted areas (i.e. radiators, cpu heatsinks), but I managed to not pay attention back when I upgraded things somehow :confused: I'm not sure that the difference in fan type would do anything noticeable to the temps or not.

Ambient room temp: 21 - 25 C
My idle temps (according to HW Monitor) are:
CPU: 50 C
GPU: 52 C (I need to go into PrecisionX and adjust this fan curve a bit)

Also, what kind of idle temps should I expect once I re-paste the EVO and add SP120's in push-pull? 35 C?

I like the Corsair AIO coolers, they work well, look great, easy to install..but are they better than a decent air cooler...debatable. My H80i is great but so are heatsink/fan options for significantly less money.

I'm not delusional in thinking that somehow an AIO liquid cooler is superior..its just a different option of the many option out there!
 
Alright. Picked up Arctic Silver, and a pack of SP120s. Added the SP120s in push-pull, and re-pasted and mounted the 212. Idling about 40 C, but most of the time, my background processes eat 10-25% of CPU, so it's hovers around 42-45 C at times like right now. OC'ed a bit further as well. OC'ed to 4.4 GHz @ 1.2V. Prime95 26.6 for about 2 hours netted in a max temp of 72 C, averaging around 69/70 C.

Personally, I'd call this a victory. What are your opinions?
 
Seeing as prime95 generates way more heat than your normal load would. That seems fine.

A 10 degree drop from a push-pull + reapplying thermal paste is pretty good.

delidding's the only way to find more huge temp drops, but that's very risky business.

10 degree drop on an OC with minimal $$ spent, yah I'd say thats a win!!!
