higher clocked ram?

Lets say my Mobo supports a max of ddr-400 ram, if i go into bios and overclock or change the divider can I run ddr-500. I am just wonderign if this would work and if it did if it would give a performance boost or allow you to use cheaper ram when overclocking.

Yup. Just increase the FSB to 250MHz. You may need to fiddle with the timings to make the overclock stable (not all memory is the same - it may not run at the advertised timings).

So if I was planning to OC I could just buy a value brand of at a higher clock speed and when I increase the FSB or change the divider it would run just fine? Would I still be able to boot into bios if I am using higher clocked RAM?

Well, DDR value memory is only rated at DDR400. It may hit DDR500, it may only oc by 5MHz. Memory rated to run at DDR500 (ie, it WILL hit 250MHz) is more expensive, simply because the companys can charge more.

If the memory is majorly unstable, you will have to clear the BIOS by removing the battery/switching the mobo jumpers about, as even the BIOS won't boot up. If it slightly unstable, you can access the BIOS easy, but Windows will be unstable.
