higher core CPUs and games

I'm looking into which CPU to get for a gaming PC and a few of the games I want to play to use different amounts of cores. My question is if I were to get a six-core for a future investment, would that slow down the processing of any game not up to snuff for the amount of cores in the CPU or would it perform at max, only utilizing the amount of cores it needs to?

If I worded it badly in any way just have me rephrase it... I'm not exactly the computer genius here.

what cpu are you looking at, currently intel's i series is the best, but amd is coming out with a competetor supposedly soon if you'd rather wait a month or 2, but we don't know a date so it could be longer too.

and on that, since I doubt that your forking out 700+ on a processor, dont get the 6 core AMD. Wait for bulldozer and get a 8 core unlocked. Should give way better performance.
 
no i was just saying, and then yall couldn't see it and it was obvious so i was annoyed that a 14then/15now y.o. could see something a 17y.o. and others couldn't. and where are you getting 700+, unless you meant to hit 4 since it's bellow 7, and meant like 100 now and 300 later for the 8150p
 
i was referring to the intel 6 cores. basically, since i doubt he will pay intels 700 premium for hexcore, he will buy amd hex core. Its a bad idea this close to a new release.
Sorta like buying a $1000 EE c2q the day before i7 launched.
 
if your gunna pay 700 for a six-core, then you might as well go for the 990X for 1k, if you're going for the 1K, wait for sb-e or ib, which i knoe one if not both will have 6 cores, and be increadibly fast
 
Well I'm running into intel processors every couple of hours worth of finding CPUs... Which would you guys say is best for gaming, Intel or Radeon?
 
your asking about apples and oranges man. Intel=processor, Radeon=GPU. intel=/=radeon.

Intel is a faster CPU clock for clock, but AMD generally has better performance dollar for dollar.
 
Sorry, didn't even think of what i was saying. I got confused with the ties Radeon being a brand of GPUs under AMD and whatnot...thanks for answering my question anyway though.
 
Higher cores will not impact on performance infact my next system upgrade will be Octocore 8 physical cores 16 threads whenever this may be. I will be sticking with Intel as i always have (never had a failed processor by them.) With this will most definantly be another chipset hence motherboard. So I will just go all out and buy all new system hardware.

No one does, from any cpu company ;) but very rarely you will find a dead one. Very rarely. Or maybe people put 2v through them and say it was DOA.

Let's say game A takes advantage of two cores/threads only. Even in a dual core vs quad core scenario, the quad core will win. Why? It's because on the dual core, you have two threads dealing with the OS and the game, plus everything else in between. With the quadcore, you have two threads running the game and another two to run the OS and everything in between. That's not exactly how it works because windows would still do stuff on the two cores uses by the game anyway.

And even if the gain from extra cores is minimal, it is a gain regardless :)

For games that are heavily multithreaded (Bad Company 2 can create up to 30 threads or something ridiculous), the number of cores also has a heavy affect on performance.
 
AMD and Intel are amazing in their quality control. The information I have read is about 1 in 500 processors are defective that are bought new from AMD or Intel.
 
All the retail processrs I have bought over the years, which is hundreds and mostly AMD, not one DOA or went bad unless it was my fault.
 
I wonder why CPUs are such high quality, but I always hear of bad RAM and video cards being shipped. There's probably a simple answer, I'm just not thinking of it.
 
Dont really know. Might be each CPU are tested by the foundries before being shipped out. The same with GPUs and memory chips before being shipped to manufacturers.

But then manufacturers of cards/boards and memory sticks probably just test a few of each lot/batch of a run. Just a guess.
 
Oh yeah, probably not AMD's or Nvidia's chipset that fails, but something the outside manufacturer of the card does to it.
 
i don't remember how it is now, but next year amd's manufacturer that actually makes the physical chip has a new contract that was changed from them buying a batch then amd decides what to do with it, to now they purchase each chip indevidually after testing it or something like that to get a 100% quality control or something, and it is cheaper or something for them cuz no duds ever sold.

Well thats just for the rest of 2011, buying them by the processor/die. It forces the foundries to get the yeild rate on the wafer up. The foundries end up eating the bad dies. Next year they go back to buying them by the wafer.
