Think I may have deleted files my drive needs to work. Its a Hitachi HTS545050B9SA00. I had a rootkit virus and deleted all partitions and formatted the device using the windows installer disc but then it froze when I tried to install windows. Tried to run Hitachi's DFT but this froze at the very start also. Any suggestions?

There aren't any files that I am aware of that the HDD needs to operate, try plugging it in as a slave to another machine (or put it into an enclosure if it is a laptop HDD, and then run a Low Level Format Tool on the HDD, this will rebuild the sectors. Then try it again.
 
And for god's sake, next time when you get infected, don't be deleteing the partitions when all you need to do is come back here and I can help you get it removed.
 
Ha thanks I will do next time. Hindsight is a great thing. Tried plugging it in to a usb-sata adapor but the laptop freezes when I try access or format the drive.
 
There's some issue with the drive. Stick it back in the original machine and use a Parted Magic CD to run EraseDisk.
 
You probably have a failing drive. Can you connect it to a desktop computer and see if it reacts the same? Hitachi drives are terrible. If you replace the drive, get a western digital or seagate drive.

This is the screen I get after taking about 5 or six minutes to show the drives. Don't know why there are 2 volumes. Windows Disk management will not load
 
Like I said your best bet is to get either a Western Digital or Seagate hard drive. Where do you usually get your parts from?
 
Samsung is an okay brand. Right on level with WD and Seagate.

SATA 2 or SATA 3 will not matter on a HDD. You can not fill up the bandwidth anyway.
