thanks for any help and suggestions!

I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client, as do AntiVir or avast!.

Please download one of these programs, allow it to perform a full scan, and remove whatever it finds.

Your version of HijackThis is out of date. Please delete this version from your system and download the updated HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe.

Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Please post an updated HijackThis log using this new version.

sorry about taking so long, here's the new logfilr

No problems about the delay, let's take care of what's left.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to C:\SDFix

You may wish to print out these instructions or copy them to a notepad document since you will be unable to access the Internet while in Safe Mode to read from this site.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode from the list).
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt. Post this log in your next reply.
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Once done, please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entries:
  • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-2195196122-701493148-3945103498-1009\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [{478CB1E8-0C80-1033-0519-060509080001}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{478CB1E8-0C80-1033-0519-060509080001}\Update.exe" mc-110-12-0000272 (User 'Compaq_Owner')
  • O20 - Winlogon Notify: winwea32 - winwea32.dll (file missing)
  • O23 - Service: Security Center (wscsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe (file missing)
Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Please delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\{478CB1E8-0C80-1033-0519-060509080001}

Please reboot and post a new HijackThis log along with the SDFix report.

okay, everything seems to be running just fine now, I really appreciate the help, I consider myself fairly computer adept, but when the normal virus/spyware programs won't clear something up, I'm just no good at fixing it. Here's the newest log

oh, I just have one quick question, which probably belongs in another section, but, is there a way to keep quicktime from starting with the computer? I've gone through msconfig and turned all quicktime related startup tasks off, but nothing seems to work, any advice would greatly help!

Thanks again for all the help!

Excellent, your logfile now appears to be clean, but there is one update I would strongly recommend.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it:
    javaicon.gif

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

With regards to your QuickTime problem, right click on the QuickTime icon in the system tray, and click on QuickTime preferences. Click on the Advanced Tab. Uncheck Install QuickTime icon in system tray and click OK.

Alternatively, you can run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entry:
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Below I have included some ideas on how to prevent future infections.

Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer. While there is no way to guarantee safety when you use a computer, these steps will make it much less likely that you will need to endure another infection. While we really like to help people, we would rather help you protect yourself so that you won't need that help in the future.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the Critical Updates for Windows. These will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates or get into the habit of checking Windows Update regularly. They usually have security updates every month. You can set Windows to notify you of Updates so that you can choose, but only do this if you believe you are able to understand which ones are needed. This is a crucial security measuer.

As a minimum, you need at least an antivirus, firewall and some type of anti-spyware program.

Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

I notice you are running Super Antispyware, which is good. Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs and will work along with Super Antispyware to protect you:

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's
Immunize and TeaTimer features if you don't have the resident part of another anti-spyware program running.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent malware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for real-time protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

If you use Internet Explorer, it is a good idea to use IE-Spyad which provides protections against malicious websites.

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure are looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScripts, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.
If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here
Opera is available here: http://www.opera.com/download/

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help. :)

thanks ceewi1!! I really appreiate the help. In regards to other browsers, where I live the only available service is dialup, I'm way too rural to get anything else. With the dialup service I have, it "accelerates" web pages, it compresses text and pictures, making them less viewable, but the surf speeds are par with mid-grade dsl. Anyways, I was under the impression that with a PPP connection I would be just fine with the windows firewall, though if I'm wrong feel free to correct me. Also, I do currently use Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster, quite a few programs I don't have right now because I recently had to reinstall windows because my sister ruined the hardrive that I had. Also I have windows on automatic updates, it just...takes a long time (the dialup blows for downloads) which contributes to the out of dateness on some of my programs.
Again, I really appreciate all the help, and rapwaydown, mostly I just like the system tray to be clean, though quicktime was really affecting my startup time, it's down to seven seconds after I log in. Thanks again!

edit: I forgot to say, I run quite a few spyware programs: ad-aware, a squared, avg anti-spyware and super anti spyware, It did slip my mind to run the antivirus programs, I also run Spyware guard and spyware blaster, and right now avast! for antivirus, and I'm asking someone else to download the larger programs for me.

I've become quite paranoid about bad programs, my sister, a 14 year old high school freshman :P likes to download all the smiley programs, and the avatar programs, and all that, well, thanks again!
