Well Im building another PC on a tight budget, ok VERY tight. 600$ tight.

Ill be re using my video card in the new system its an 8800GT and ill also be reusing my hard rive for JUST a bit till funds pick up again and I can get better stuff.

But my question is, if im on a tight budget is it worth getting the i7 or a core 2 quad?

I obviously realize no i7 system can be built for 600$ But is it worth waiting....quite a while for the i7? Or should I just get a core 2 quad?

Anything else you guys need to know just ask. Thanks!

I7 has no real world use other then for enthusiasts also a quad-core is kinda pointless unless you do something other then gaming.

In my case I video edit/compress which can use 4 cores.

Personally with your budget if your a gamer I would get the new AM3 AMD Dual-core or go phenom II. They both compare with Intel C2Q and C2D lines and are cheaper. Course it wont compare to the I7s but its overkill for the price of the I7 currently is.

CPU Phenom II 550 (dual-core) ($109.99)

or quad-core if you want it

GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P AM3
(139.99 15 dollar mail in)

3x2GB DDR3 (99.99 with 20 dollar mail in)

See that is $310

See what I just did? I just got you a GTX 275 or a GTX 260 (if you go quad-core)

Wow......holy crap man. Thanks! Seems pretty good so far. What kind of power supply do you suggest for the quad?

Well I currently run a TX750 Corsair PSU and I run as you can see a SIMILAR set up.

GTX 260 216 core requires at least a 500w PSU with 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin power connector so I would say a 650w to be safe but for the price upgrading to a 750w would be better for future upgrades or overclocking.

Mind you this card is a massive 10.5 inches long...a 8800GT I think was 8 inches.

To make up the sale for the new PSU you can sell your 8800GT for 60-70 bucks on craigslist or something....I recently traded my 8800GT + 30 bucks for my GTX 260. This way you can still upgrade your GPU.

But this is depending on if you have a medium or a full sized tower. A Mini tower (aka HP/Dell towers) will not work the GPU is about as long as them lol.

Yep and I adore it...I bought it last year for $70 it was on sale 20 off and had a 20 mail in rebate ^-^

I love Corsair though...quality products every time from them.

Also I love it for the single rail...instead of 2-4 rails like OCZ for example. I hate having to balance the loads on the rails.

Why not? Just a couple bucks more.

Im not much of an overclocker.

So I think weve got a pretty sweet build going so far eh?

And I didnt even know triple cores existed.

Only for AMD they started out as screw ups...quad-cores with 1 slow core so they disabled 1 core sold them as tri-cores.

People liked them so they rolled um out again. This time on purpose ^-^

Phenom II rocks go with a triple core or quad core phenom and that will be enough and will make good on budget and AMD PCs have highest value for money
