I'm putting some money in with my roommate for a new computer, our budget is $2000 CAD, Obviously spending less the better, but I would like a quad core processor, at least 3 gigs of ram, a couple hdds, a wicked video card, Monitor, mouse, keyboard, as for an O/S Havn't decided, but open to suggestions, would like to stay with Windows, cuz my roommate is pretty computer illiterate, lol, and is familiar with its platform.

Any suggestions? :D

Thanks.

Nice thanks Cleric,

After more thought I'm thinking I'm gunna build two seperate computers, but with the same specs, so we each get our own computer. So new budget of $1000 per computer, lol, sorry, thanks :)

Ok, went to NCIX so all of this will be in canadian dollars. This is just a tentative list to see how you will fare going with 2 $1000 systems. This is before rebates.

cpu - Intel Q6600 ($240)
memory - Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-800 CL5 ($80)
mobo - Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L ($103)
gpu - Evga Geforce 9800GTX 512MB ($200)
hdd - Seagate 7200.11 500GB 32MB ($89)
optical - Samsung 20X Dvd Burner ($34)

I'll run through each component for more explanation, I did this pretty quickly.

1. Just looked up the Q6600, it is the cheapest intel quad-core on newegg, assumed it would be on ncix as well. Great price/performance, excellent cpu, blah blah.
2. I saw the Corsair XMS2 while skimming through another component page and it has a good price for this good memory. With your budget, may have to start out with 2GB instead of 4GB and upgrade when you need/want to.
3. The Gigabyte mobo I picked out is a good reliable board, and overclocks well...for a good price. I am relatively unfamiliar with the newer mobos that have come out very recently however, someone else might recommend another newer one for cheaper...so leave this component open.
4. The 9800GTX is an excellent gpu you will be happy with, especially for its price as prices have fallen as the new stuff has come out in the last week or so. I checked on the ATI HD4850 first, but on ncix anyway, they are more expensive than the 9800GTX's...and they perform very similarly.
5. For hard drives, I would go with a Seagate. Picked the 500GB because it is usually at a good pricepoint for the size. You mentioned you wanted to hard drives, but figured I would throw out a list with 1 due to you wanting two cheaper systems now.
6. Just happened to come across this Samsung Dvd Burner. On newegg, usually samsung has about the cheapest quality burner available. For dvd burners, basically just get the cheapest one you can find and run it by the forum, they all are about the same nowadays.

The total of the above components before rebates and shipping is $746. You would still need a case, power supply, monitor, mouse, keyboard, OS.

Assuming you bought a case for $50, psu for $50, monitor for $200, mouse for $10, keyboard for $20, and an OS for $100...that would still put you at around $1176 per system.

As for your options to downgrade:

1. Going with 2GB of memory rather than 4GB. Will save roughly $40
2. Going with a smaller hard drive.
3. Going with a lesser video card, like a Geforce 8800GT. The difference between that and the 9800GTX isn't that much, for maybe a $50 savings.
4. Only buying one copy of the OS, to share. Unsure as to whether or not that is possible...I'm sure someone else would know.
5. Going for a dual-core cpu over a quad-core.

Sorry for the length of this sucker, I started it with the intention of giving you a rough estimate of what to expect component-wise, but it got a little out of hand. I very much agree with the poster that posted the $1500 list for one system regarding his component selection. As you can see, there is a far cry of difference between a $1500 system and a $1000. The monitor and OS kill you, basically. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys guys :)

Would it be a better choice to downgrade the processor? I don't need a quad-core, just wanted it, but if it'll be a difference in price, it might be beneficial for a downgrading... Any good processors u guys recommend?

Looks like a solid computer to me.
It's a little over budget but the HD4850 is well worth it.
To those thinking i forgot a power supply the case comes with a power supply which can handle the HD4850 no problem.

Hope this helps. :)

wicked, thanks respital. I remember hearing about that site, anyone ever have any problems with em?

the only useful thing ultimate has over premium is drive encryption, which is a pain in the butt if your computer ever breaks and you want to get your data back. are people really that concerned with somebody coming to their house and stealing their harddrive?

Hey! You forgot about the Windows Ultimate Extras, such as Texas Hold 'em. :P

haha oh yeah, how could i forget! thats definitely worth the extra money
:P

ya, ultimate seems a waste of money... is vista even worth it?

vista is definitely worth it if you have the hardware to power it. whether or not you go 64 bit is another, more difficult question to answer. i suggest reading through some other threads on the forum and see what other people have to say about it
