Well I think its time for me to get another HDD
i was looking at this one for my current rig...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144450

I was planing on raiding it but I will have to do some serious reading on it
because I dont know the first thing to setting up a raid.
well if I choose to get this H.D what else will I need?
im not sure if I need anything specific for setting up a raid or not...

Well Thanks for any input.

For a RAID you need a RAID controller and a bunch of disks that preferably are the same size. Different sized disks will work but the bigger drive will be limited in size by the smaller. Then you just need to pick the RAID level you want and follow the directions for your RAID controller on how to set it up. After you have your array it's just like a normal hard drive, you have to partition/format it and install your OS.

oh so this means im going to have to get a 300G Hdd??
if so would you recommend getting 2x 300G Hdd's?
because I was thinking about getting at least 500+ more gigs

Thanks.

If you wanted to use RAID in conjunction with your current drive, I would go with an identical (or at least similar) 300GB HD, just so you dont have to worry as much about them not being compatible.

Keep in mind however that RAID0 increases your chance of hard drive failure, but the most common problem I found would be that you accidentally delete the RAID array or reset your BIOS.

You can RAID any 2 hard drives, it's just better to use 2 drives that are the same size, so 2+ 500GB drives would work. If you mean to RAID it with the drive you already have now then yes it would be best to get another 300GB drive.

I wouldn't suggest RAIDing but it's up to you. Unless you want data security RAID is pretty useless to the average home user.

RAIDing in general increases the chances of drive failure, not just RAID0.

I'd just suggest keeping it with the normal setup. If you have RAID 0, there's more chance of things going wrong, and with RAID 1, there's practically no chance of things going wrong, but you have half the space. JBOD is the best compromise.

well...for example would it be somehow possible say if I were to purchase a 1TB Hdd, to transfer all the data from my current HD to the 1tb one and just use that one?
with out raid?
because my main concern is getting more space I currently am struggling to keep 30G's on here..

Thanks

Very true. The reason I said to go with another 300GB is so he doesnt have wasted space by using say, his current 300GB and a new 500GB hard drive.

IMO if storage is your main concern, I would buy a large hard drive, or maybe two. If I was in your situation, I would use your current 300GB hard drive for the OS, programs, etc, and use the 1TB hard drive for all your files, music, photos, etc.

You can transfer your files over to the 1TB and just use that if you want, but you would need to reinstall the OS.

I would personally buy a 500GB or two instead of 1TB, solely because they are a bit cheaper. However, a 1TB hard drive would sure turn heads ;)

so...well I dont understand what you guys are telling me...
you guys are saying get a 500G or 1Tb HDD and install it in replacement to my current
300G HD?
but then I will loose all of my work?

I mean If I buy an external HDD and just transfer everything to there I should be fine right?

I was saying you should keep your current 300GB hard drive for your OS, programs, etc, and buy either a 500GB, 750GB, or 1TB drive just for your media and files.

You can buy an external drive if you want, but if you are going to be using the drive often I would buy an internal one.

so get an extra 500 or so G HD and how would I install it? would it still be raid or what?
sorry im new to this lol im used to just using 1HD

If you get a new one and connect the power and data cables you just have to goto disk management in windows (right click my computer->pick manage->open the storage tree to find disk management)and intialize/partition and format. All of which you just have to right click on the drive in the drive management console and pick the option for it.

No you shouldn't use RAID. RAID0 basically combines two or more drives and makes it appear as one.

If you dont feel comfortable with installing your own hard drive, then you can buy an external one if you wish.

so its possible to have 2 hard drives with out using raid?
all I would have to do is install it like I did the first one with out configuring anything
in BIOS? and when my computer starts I would partition th drive then I can use it??

Yes, installing it just like you did with the one you already have is all you have to do to add the drive to your system. It will not be RAIDed if you do that. Then partition/format and away you go. :)
