*didn't know where to put this video card or game section, feel free to move it*

i just got a new bfg 7900gt and its supposed to be very good, yet I'm getting major tearing in soldier of fortune 2! i mean seriously that game cant possibly be taxing my card! its the quake 3 engine for god sakes:o , but its weird like the world will move and render perfectly but there's just a lot of tearing which i thought this card was able to handle, when put on vsync and capped at 60 fps i see none...I'm wondering if its my PS (crappy 300w) but my box says that these cards are able to use a PS that low because of there smaller die formula....weird eh?:D

Well it doesn't matter the card, with vsync off you always run the risk of getting visual tearing, and it appears in some games more than others.

Doesn't the 7900gt require 400w? Must be the power supply

How could it be the power supply? he said

I think if you can play it with vsync (which syncs frames to refreash rate which stops visual tearing) then your in good shape.

You have to realize that the Vsync setting is a demanding one. So if it was your card the game would not play well with "Vsync". This proofs without a doubt it's not your video card. It's either the game or the driver. Play it with Vsync on and enjoy it. You have updated the game?

yeah, Vsync's okay for me but i'm just a perfectionist and like to have things at there highest settings....60fps isn't that bad, but what refresh rate should i have my monitor set at if its native (and used) resolution is 1280 by 1024? maybe that will help, because the tearing isn't just normal its BAD in a lot of games, and yes all game, sound, gfx card, system drivers are up to date

evr tried it with any other video cards? it might either be u have a bad card, or someother hardware is having problems

Refresh rate capability is basically monitor specific. most users preferences would be 75Hz with 1280x1024. You must be playing it online? This is the only time I'd care to have more then 60 FPS myself.

Like I said, Chances of it being his video card is slim to none. There is nothing that I'm hearing here that would tell me he's having any sort of hardware problems.

Also, are there any other games you have trouble with?

a video card defect will not result in tearing. just match your refresh rate to the fps you are averaging.. if your monitor can support that refresh rate. it can also work with multiples... i.e. if you average 140 fps, you can set your refresh rate to 70hz and it will reduce if not eliminate the tearing. 70hz is a good refresh rate that is kind to the eyes (65hz and below is like a flickering flourescent light to me)

That's exactly what's supposed to happen. When V-sync is off, your graphics card is drawing frames faster than your monitor can display them. This is what causes tearing. The tearing will be worse with this new card, as it is drawing more frames. When you turn on v-sync, it caps the number of frames drawn to the monitors refresh rate. Turning up your monitor's refresh rate will help.

This explains it well:http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1027966611&postcount=1
