Home based web-server, realistic?

Hey guys,

At this time, I'm using VDS/VPS for all 4 of my websites, but am getting sick of the .25-1.5% downtime every month, as well as the $50/mo charge.. so I'm considering doing a home-based web server for my sites. I've already checked out and tried dozens of VDS/VPS's and fully dedicated servers through a third party host are far too expensive per month.

I can get the hardware to do so, that's no problem.. but will my home internet connection be suitable for this? I have dual connections - 6Mbps / 1.5Mbps and 7Mbps / 2Mbps (second one is burstable to 21Mbps / 6Mbps).

So, is it realistic to try and run my websites from a home based web server? Do I need a better connection to the web for it?

-mak

PS: I'm also aware that a UPS would be in order, which won't be a problem.

I run a couple of sites from my home connection - just make sure you have a static IP's. It all comes down to traffic - if your traffic is somewhat low on the sites you should be fine, its when they / if they get popular you'll have problems with response times. The sites I run from home I cant run from an alternative spot (at least not for cheap) Exchange and a web ticketing system.

I also have a couple of sites posted at godaddy, and they only charge 6 a month. I have an unlimited hosting plan so I can potentially host all my sites from a single $6\month plan. Might check them out --> www.godaddy.com

Looks like you should be ok with those connections! as already mentioned make sure your ip's are static if not then use a dynamic dns service, apart from that you should be ok (providing your isp is reliable)

Either connection is fine...

And what in the Hell are these other posters running you through?

First of all, set your server a static IP in your router. Second, you need to forward Port 80 from your router to the server computer. Next, install WAMP... Move your HTML files into the Apache "htdocs" folder and you should be hosting. Last thing is your domain, if you don't already have one.

Ask questions about what parts you are having trouble on...
