Home Network problems

I have a latency problem on my home network, I only have 2 desktops connected, mine is the better build of the two, yet my latency averages 400ms in wow and my wifes 120ms .. Mine gets so bad that I really start to lag..

I tried disabling the onboard ethernet, and installed a new pci network card (wired) and still no difference.. Could this be a faulty router?? :confused:

Sounds like your getting a large amount of packet collisions, which can result from a wrongly wired and/or faulty network cable or network cards are set at full duplex, the router can't handle that, lastly it's possible that the Routers faulty but that's rare.

umm.. how do I check the duplex on the cards? I'm not that knowledgeable on networking.. I'll replace my cables to see if that makes any difference

Well if you've not messed in the past with the Network Card settings, I would guess it's not that, sometimes people experiment with the settings and get things wrong, but if you don't try you won't learn :)

1) Is your Internet Access ok?

2) Do you get good speeds online?

3) Are you using standard straight through network cables or crossover.

Straight = pin 1 to 1, 2 to 2 etc
Crossover = pin 1 to 3, 2 to 6, 3 to 1, 6 to 2

As you both on the network are having the same type of problems it's looking likely that it's the router, I assume that you've got nothing running that's taking up the bandwidth while your doing these checks?

Just to rule these out because we go down a different route, can you get hold of another Router to test?.

1) Is your Internet Access ok? I did a speed check and it comes out fine, but my latency is now between 1400ms and 4500+ ms.. but my wife hasn't really experienced much latency problems.. I had her go with me to different areas of the game and when I experienced the extremely high latency, she was doing pretty well.. so now it seems it's mainly on my end.. :confused:

I'm using Standard cables.. Also my pc is much newer and faster than hers as well, so idk what could be wrong..

I have no other router atm, but I did a direct connect and still high latency on my end... :confused:

Well, it would take me about 30 seconds to find what was wrong if I was there, but as I'm not and judging by your replies it's down to 1) Your Computer 2) The port your currently plugged into on the router 3) Router misconfiguration.

So where getting closers to the cause of this frustrating issue :)

Well, tried every other port on the router and not really any difference..

How do I check router config, change it, etc ??

or how do I know if it's my pc, or better yet what on it?

OK first off I need more info, how are you caculating this latency, are you getting the latency errors on the LAN side or when your on the internet you have latency issues. This will make a difference. Also there may be problems with the specific router you are using. I would make sure the firmware is up to date as sometimes the routers can cause an issue like the one you describe.

If you need to reach me directly I would be happy to assist you further, my contact information is avalible at my website ***LINK REMOVED***

umm.. yeah great a spammer has hijacked a thread in which I really need help on, so it looks as if now my problem will go overlooked..

Try sharing a different directory on the XP Home computer. For example, try making something like a C:\DATA directory and share it. Try uninstalling Zone Alarm (not just disabling it).
