Could you explain in more details what you are wanting to do and the problem(s). I take it you want to transfer the data but more detail is needed.

Yes i want to transfer data from old pc to new. I was hoping i could view old pc as a extra hard drive, such as drive Z. What other info do you require?

Right, well get your crossover cable and plug the one end into the back of the one machine, and the other end into the other machine. Then what you need to do is set the machines up so that they are in the same WORKGROUP. Which you do under MY NETWORK PLACES, and then on the left hand side is the option saying SETUP HOME OR OFFICE NETWORK, run throght that processes oin both machines, making sure you have the same details on both. After doing that and rebooting both machines, go to MY NETWORK PLACES, and go to VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS which is on the left, and on the which ever machine, you will be able to see the other PCS data. As long as the files are being shared. To share, just right clikc the releant folder(s) and select properties, and select SHARING.

Thanks for info so far, getting somewhere now!! I had tried what u said. The problem was workgroup name was different on pc's.

Old pc now is visible.

Now have another problem- when i click on old pc icon, i get the following message;

'Win98se(pc's name)is not accessible.You might not have permission to use this network resource,Contact the administrator of this server if you have permissions.
The network path was not found'

Help:confused:
Anyone please

You can go backward....

Go on the XP machine, create a sharef folder on the desktop. Share it with full permission. Then go to the win98 machine and open the shared folder and upload all the files into that folder.

Win XP has a 'files and settings transfer wizard' which I used to copy all the files in 'my documents' folder, my internet connection settings, emails, bookmarks etc in one step. I used a crossover cable but i cant remember how much network configuration i had to do.
First, enter the wizard on XP, it'll tell you to download a .exe file to memory stick or similar, which you then take to 98se and run it. Then you connect the 2 pc's and follow instructions. Sorry, i cant remember if i had to configure the 2 together but i dont remember it being difficult.

are you directly connecting or using a router? As far as i know you just do exactly what you just said and make sure they are connected (ive only used a router though)
