Home networks

I have two Acer Aspire laptops, both running Windows Vista Home Premium and a Advent 4412 Netbook running Windows XP Pro and I would like to have them on a home network but I am not sure of the steps necessary to do this. The main reason is that the netbook does not have a CD/DVD drive and I would like t load some software from CDs.

At present the Advent netbook and one of the Acer laptops can see each other but the second laptop remains well hidden.

All three are, I believe , in the same workgroup called "workgroup".

When on the netbook double clicking on the laptop brings up a small windows requesting a "user name" and a "password".

What are the steps I need to take to get all three talking to each other?

What is the username and password I need to enter into the box? Is a unsername referring to the laptop or a username referring to one of the user accounts?

Finally is there a useful web page I can go to help a network dummy step by step?

is windows file sharing on.

can you see them in Network Connections.

you may need to share the folder in folder properties. Or if its windows 7 then you will need to add it as ilibary. Also make sure that the folder sharing is enabled in user controls.

To get passed the password and user name. you will have to right click the drive or folderyour sharing and click permissions. then you need to click full control. Try making a network setup disk. This may be the easiest way.

Thanks for the info it has been very helpful

I checked with one laptop and "requiring a username and password" was turned on so I turned it off. This has solved the username/password problem.

When I go to network places on my netbook I can now see two items

Public on AcerAspire5630 (one of my laptops)

SharedDocs on Advent4412 (My netbook)

So I am part the way there. Does this mean the Acer needs changing to Private and what do i need to change on the Advent?

Unfortunately the laptop I really wish to see remains elusive.

The main reason why I wish to set up the network now is that I would like to be able to use the DVD drive on one of the laptops to setup software on the netbook.

Is this possible?

EDIT

I have now found out how to share HDs and DVDs

Go to "Computer" on the relevant network computer
Right click on the HD or DVD and select "Share"
Next select "Advanced Sharing" and then click on "Share this Folder"

Administrator permission required.

Re the differences between the two laptops and the reason why one is seen and not the other. Both laptops are running AVG Security version 8.5.421. Could AVG be blocking one of the laptops. If so how could I set the necessary permission?
