Home server?!?!

I have been playing around with a spare computer I had laying around...I put Red Hat on it, and I was wondering how/what do I need to make the computer capable of hosting webpages. And, how would this work? Would someone type in your ip into the address bar?

You need to install the server, most people use apache

thats one option, or you could register you ip with a domain name company that will list it again a uri on there dns.
Or if your not on a static ip maybe look into something like dyndns.com

Yeh, but for any serious web hosting you would need a pretty hefty internet connection, also you would run into all sorts of problems if your behind a broadband router. You would need to forward port 80 and 81 to the internal IP for the home server.

I installed Apache, and can connect to the server...but I can't find the directory to put my own site in...anybody know the default?!?!Btw, i am using WinXP instead of RedHat...

would a 5Mb internet conection be good enough for one website, that wont use more then 25GIG's on bandwith, and prabally not ALLOT at one time, fast?

Maybe i can skip my paid hosting...

Thanks I found it...but I did encounter a problem...Only people on my network can see the website...I opened all the ports, and even setup a DMZ, but only people on my network can see it. Strange thing is that people outside my network can connect to game servers hosted on my computer without difficulty

You would really need an internet connection which would NEVER go wrong, unlimited b/w and have a speed of at least 10Mbps, with that connection you should NOT do any additional downloads or browsing if you host sites on it. Its probably cheaper to just rent a server.

It probably is...but still, people should be able to connect to it

OK...Alll previous problems before this post have been solved....but I have encountered another. I am trying to put files on my website available for download...I have researched and aparently I need an FTP client of somesort? Is this correct? If so can yall point me in the right direction with this...

No, of course its not illegal, as long as its all legit what you put on there, hundreds of thousands of people host their own sites.
