Just out of curiosity, How do you build a home server?

I was just curious. It is a pipe dream But, I would use it for backing up everything from my computers.

I know free open source solution that you could use for imaging

Then you could set up another volume on your Linux rig for data back ups and just share it to mac and windows via Samba.

Overall, it is not hard to set up as long as you know some basics.

Really? This is a dumb question, How do you wire everything in?

In other words, How do you set it up?

it is just like installing windows. you will need like 10 gb. i find that is all i need... or do you mean like hardware. if so it can be crappy. it can be like a 1ghz 512 mb ram 20 gb hd (could be 10) if you want a firewall, 2 lan, if not just 1, that is it

How do you plug all your computer's into the network?

through lan to the router. but how many do you think you need?

Oh, that's how it works. Can you use any router?

yeah. just like connecting a windows computer

edit: is this for a web server?

That sounds cool. Maybe I will consider that in the next few years.

ya if you want a web server, you may want a different internet so you can keey the web flow away from your home stuff

My friend has a Dell Poweredge Server he has been wanting to get rid of. Maybe I should take it.
