Hello

I would like to turn a Dell Dimension 2400 into a Domain for me to store XP user accounts on for my family. I have Windows Server 2000 on CD, will i be able to use that for my need, if so... How would i configure the domain, how would i create accounts on it, and how would i get the Laptops to connect to it?

Man Win server 2k is sooo old. Which version do you have, because they made several back then...

I suggest you get a book, I have forgotten more about windows 2k than I even care to remember. A lot has changed and you are best off getting an ebook or white papers or something.

I just bought windows server 2008, i would like to use it for both Windows XP and Vista accounts, how would i configure vista to talk with the domain

Google is your friend, in system properties connect to network ID and it will ask for the domain info.

Ok, I am not exactly sure about this but I am thinking that you could setup the Dell computer as a mini server. If you are under the same network, meaning multiple computers/laptops are under one network, then you could use the Dell as a "home" base to store the files along with user accounts. The laptop would allow you to access the files on the computer as long as it is connected to the same network.

hold on: my school has computers with home premium on it that connect to the school domain? how is this possible?

Are you positive it's a domain and not a workgroup, or that the OS is actually Home Premium? Home Premium does not support joining a domain.

I am positive it is a domain, because i get the option to choose either the student or teacher domain on the logon screen, and in the xp lab we connect to the same domain. I am also positive that it is home premium

^ That. Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise are what you'd need. Pro/Ultimate if you decide to get Win7 for some reason.

I don't know what to say, check again, because unless they upgraded to a higher version then you must be mistaken.

Maybe they run Novell/SuSe/eDirectory which will have it's own client and not need a feature in Windows to be present. Just another reason to dislike Microsoft though, as they use the ability to bind to server as a price point, no other OS does that.
