Homework help Linux/Windows GUIs

Hello,

This is the question my teacher posted: List the three most popular GUIs used in the two operating systems (Windows 7 and Fedora 13) we are studying and the major differences and how they are similar.

I have emailed the instructor and haven't heard back in 24 hours and my other classmates seem confused as well. So I figured maybe someone here could shed some light.

Firstly, is he asking about GUIs as in Operating Systems? Would the three most popular versions be 7, 8 and XP? How would I find the most popular Linuxes? Is he asking about desktop environments? Kernels? Shells? This is where I have started my paper but I have become overwhelmed. There does not seem to be much information about the popularity of Linux. Right now I have listed Unbantu's Unity, Mint's Cinnamon and KDE Plasma as the three most popular, but are they?

Or is does he mean it in a strict GUI sense in which case for Windows 7 would that be Windows Manager, excel, ect? What would be the most popular GUIs in this case?

Anything you can add or chime in with would be appreciated.

Sorry, I should have added some additional info. The question is for "Operating System Concepts". The question was as follows: List the three (3) most popular GUIs used in the two (2) operating systems we are studying and the major differences and how they are similar.

I added in that we are using Win 7 and Fedora 13.

GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. You should be able to continue on your own from there :)

Not to be mean, but both of those responses were very unhelpful. I know how to use the internet, I have googled and I have read the Wikipedia pages along with many, many others.

Maybe my question was a bit convulated. Do you think the teacher means GUI's in the sense of operating systems (a GUI)? Or do you think he means in a windows Explorer/Microsoft excel/Microsoft Word (all GUIs) sense?

If I were to pose that question to students, then I would be referring to the desktop environment and the underlying layers. Because he was not specific and being that the desktop is visually the center of the operating system, I'm thinking this is the GUI he is asking the students to list. Asking which is the three most popular GUI is a trick question. Any opinion would almost certainly be subjective. There are five relevant Windows operating systems to choose from, so you'll have to Google opinions and polls to get some results. Linux has more GUI flavors than all other operating systems. He asked for the most popular. Again, very subjective. If you put 20 Linux users in one room and asked which Linux persuasion had the best GUI, you'd probably start a rumble.

Thank you for your help WhoX, that's what I thought as well, but needed to bounce it off someone else and the dog just stares at me blankly.

I understand it the same way as WhoX.
Like, I don't consider DOS or a barebone Arch to be a GUI, it's just a command line. But it's still an OS, just not a GUI :)

GUI is the OS in my opinion. As that refers to the question. IN answering, specify your assumptions of this.l
