Honestly, what spec for gaming?!

Hey

I got a new pc recently, and its the first that is anywhere near the spec to play modern games. But I think I need a new graphics card, im using the built in one which shares the system ram and games (especally quake 4) get kinda jerky. I guess thats why there jerky anyway  .

So what options do I have, I dont really want to spend a fortune, I guess I need a pci one ( not really sure how the other ones go in?) The main thing im looking for is a linux compatable card. I dont even know if there are compatability issues, but I would rather not find out the expensive way. I run games in M$ and do everything else in linux.

thanks
Joe

gonna need a rund down on your system specs to give you an idea of what card you need.

motherboard model, cpu, that kinda thing and any ideas on how much you wuold be willing to spend

i would strongly recommend a better video card than that. Somthing like a 9600XT or better if you have AGP, or a x1600PRO or better if you have PCI-E.

hey

well its a dell, so dont really know what mobo it would be using? Its a dual core 3.2ghz p4 with 2ghz of ram

As I said the onboard card is shared with system ram with a max 256mb I think, but I know thats gonna be way slower than 256mb of dedicated vram. I dont really wanna spend too much, under £100 I guess, dont really know what that is in $, $150 I guess?

The most important thing is that its linux freindly, is this an issue with graphics cards?

should be ok with linux with most things, its a well supported platform now, whats the model number of the dell?

should be able to get an nvidia in the 6 series for £100 but not gonna be able to get a 7series series i dont think

or as omega said, the x1600pro should be a viable option

What Model number Dell. If its Dual Core Im assuming that its an e510 or better and they come standard with a single PCIe x16 slot... Anyway I would purchase at a min an nVidia 6800gs. BTW one of my current rigs is an e510 which I run with a Radeon x850XT which runs for a bout US $220 - 260. I prefer to use my AMD rig for gaming because I run sli but the e510 with the Radeon X850XT is a very capable gaming machine.

actually the x850xt has dropped to like 170 bucks.

@Joe2003: I think you should be able to get a 7600gt, which is better than the 6800GS.
