Hosting Website

I'm thinking about starting up a web hosting site or a file hosting site and was wondering what all do I have to do/have? How do i get the mysql/php to work and all that stuff

Also, What type of internet connection do I need to run a "small" sized hosting website?

The first thing you need to do when you decide to start a business in any particular field is you ask yourself a few questions... a few are listed below.

Do I know enough to be successful?

Have I (on my own) thoroughly researched this business proposition to the point where I am comfortable in making decisions based on other (non-professional) people's opinions?

...

I think you need to ask yourself these questions (and answer them) before you ask everyone your own questions. (hint: research, research, research... )

First you need to find out what "all that stuff" really entails..

That's a pretty general question. I don't believe anyone here will spoon feed you step by step, so I'll get you started.

You're going to need a decent internet connection for a "small" site, at very least DSL. Then you'll of course need a dedicated machine which will run 24/7. You will have to decide which operating system your server will run. I would personally recommend FreeBSD (As I always do), but honestly, pretty much anything will suffice your needs. From there on it gets operating system dependent; which is where I tell you to get more specific, and/or use google.

i got a 6.1Mbit/384Kbit right now, but i could get a T1 no problem.

Got this already too.

I was going to run linux but haven't decided which version, or i could run windows xp server 2003.

Is that all i need? im going to do some research on the mysql junk , but in the mean time i was thinking of starting out by just doing a file host server, the when it gets going good and i know more about hosting webpages switch it over.

You want a file hosting site? With that kind of connection? even if you get semi sort of popular, you will need more then a T1.

I would highly suggest that you just stat off with a reseller package or just a lagre regular package from a hosting company rather then once you start getting more popular switch to your own server, or you will be payment SO MUCH More per much just for the good connection, if you can even get one.

Im just going to start out with just serving about 20 peeps for a while til i get some cash built up for the t1, t3, or OC line.

Your going to have slow speeds then, ebcuase on servers its your upload speed that matters not your download speed.

T1 or better will suffice for 20 people or so :P .

FreeBSD is better quality than linux, tbh. I would for sure take it over linux for serving.

It won't take you long to get a file server running. Just follow the freebsd (If you decide to take my advice) documentation, and google any questions you have along the way.

MySQL is fairly simple. If you already know SQL, which isn't difficult in the first place, then it should be a piece of cake for you.

Good luck!
