Hot chipset on Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe

wel.. i got this motherboard recently.. and im a bit worried about the chipset temps.. when playing, the chispest goes up to 55*C

as you can see,.. it actually has a pretty fancy heatpipe cooler on it, and the copper coloured heatsink at the top right of the pic, is where its supposed to loose the heat.

But.. any suggestions about how i could lower the temps?

What kind of CPU cooler are you using and how tall is that radiator over the back mosfets?

and my CPU cooler is a Zalman CNP9500

and, assuming you mean the motherboards main power supply with the MOSFETs.. they are located under the heatsing on the right side (the silver one)
 
There should be some under the copper one as well. If the fan on that cooler (it looks fairly tall) is above the height of the copper sink you might need to get a 30mm fan or two to mount on it.
 
would placing an exhaust Fan in the back (120mm ) do any good you think?
it would be placer tight next to the big purple connector ( on the pic would it stand on top of it )
 
It may help a little. Doesn't that board come with a fan that fits on top of the copper sink? It probably doesn't fit with that cooler though.
 
One solution would be to use the CNP7700, assuming it would fit. Another would be to try and add a small fan to the northbridge (probably hard to do becuase of the heatpipes), or get a side mounted case fan to pull cool air inside directed over the northbridge or the rear heatsink.
 
well, that motherboard has no fans on it (from what I read on newegg.) ALso remmember that the stock coolers on most graphiocs cards blow air from outside the case to the inside. In your case it blows onto your chipset (happens on my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe.) I bought an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 Revision 3 Which vents the opposite direction, so it wont blow hot air onto your chipset.

In my opinion its the graphics cards that are leading to you high temps, since its only when your playing (games I assume.) My recommendation would be to buy that cooler. It dropped my card temps by 10c and my overall temps by around 6c. I never checked my chipset temps, but I assure you they went down. Good Luck!
 
The problem with the silencers is that they make your cards effectively occupy 2 slots. With SLI that leaves 1 PCI slot for a sound card or tv tuner or whatever else, there is also a free 1x(?) slot above the first video card.
 
I honestly think its rediculous to include the big printer port on a board like that. That is the PERFECT place to put a small fan to draw air flow over those big fancy heatsinks, with access to cooler outside air.

Serial/parallel ports are dead. Heck, I haven't used one since a Pentium 1!
 
Arch heres what i think u should do, take it apart...the hs on the northbridge uses a thermal pad which we all know suck balls. Try to get better heat flow from the northbridge to the heatpipe..i dont have a heatpipe but when i put as5 on my nb it dropped temps by at least 4-5C on a warm day...on a good day its dropped 10C...work with what u have for now until going and buying something else that may not work either.


heres why i think this may be the problem...since u have that zalman it blows rite on or near that heatpipe fins, if that doesnt cool it off then transfer of the heat isnt so great.

That's a good suggestion but with very little air moving over any of the heatsink fins getting heat into the system isn't the problem, it's getting the heat out. An OETS would be ideal but, as Saurian posted, with all the ports on the back theres no room for it.

I'm fairly certain that the 9500 moves >90% of the air above the fins on the heatpipe systems heatsink and any air that does move through it is traped inside by the rear panel compounding the problem.
 
well... i have a casefan in the side (80mm) blowing air in.
Its located richt abouve the RAM dimm's, right under the CPU socket.
I placed that FAN there, so it pulls cool air into the case, right before the CPU cooler, meaning that cooler gets air from outside the case.
I have that fan set to the slowest speed atm ( its such an antec tri cool, at least thats ne name iirc), because else you would hear the fan blowing.

as for the VGA coolers... i have a roster (of however its called) in the sidepannel.. much of the heated air escapes through there already.

as for Cromewell, you are right about the 9500,.. the outer tip of the fan is barely on the same height as the top of the chipset heatsink (I hope thats logically formulated.. :P )
 
Could you mount some 120mm intake fans on that grill? I'm fairly sure that would be the end of your heat problems. 1 is probably enough as it would be bringing in cool air from near the ground allowing it to rise up and out the back.
 
I could, yes,.. but due to relatively sharp edges there,.. the airsteam is quite noisy. maybe if i change she shape of those bar's a bit, it could be better.
 
the most common proble with the Asus boards is the crummy thermal paste they use....

rip it off, and shope on some AS5... your temps should drop by about 10* or so.....

here's a pic from a different perspective of the motherboard.
the chipset cooler is right behind the rear output's.. quite a bit place imo.

would placing a 30mm fan make a lot more noise? i'll also have a look at the thermal pad's.. but the copper blocks on the chips itself get quite hot already
 
Did your M.B. not include the fan that goes on top of the heat sink? I would see if you can purchase this fan from ASUS. Its a little squirrel cage fan. It blows directly down through or draws air up through the heat sink. Didn't notice which direction the flow is.
