hot cpu!

Hi all,

On more than one occassion, I have loaded SpeedFan to see my CPU temps over 50ºC, and there is a little flame icon next to it. CPU usuage is around 50%, but varrying alot. The case temp is a full 10ºC cooler, and my room temp (where the comp is) is 70ºF. So, my questions is, is there anything I can do, besides buying an aftermarket HSF, that I can do to lower my cpu temps? I've gone through my processess list and stopped things I didn't need, and I used Arctic Silver 5 as a thermal paste.

Check if the coolers fan is working correctly and if the cooler is mounted corectly to the cpu socket. The next step is to buy a better cooler.
And of course use good quality thermal paste(like you did). Also make sure there is a good airflow inside the tower.

First off, 50ºC isn't dangerously hot, and you may notice that within SpeedFan you can alter the setting for what temperature the flame is displayed. I think 50 is the default.

One thing you could do is tidy up the cables in the case, without seeing pics or knowing how good your case cooling is, I won't know how effective that will be. AS5 as a thermal paste is fine, you won't be able to get much better than you are at the moment providing you applied it correctly.

I guess if you really wanted you could downclock your processor, but I can't think why in a million years you'd want to do that.

Well, it is overclocked slightly, at about 2332 mhz (stock 2.2 ghz).

Anyway, I know that 50ºC isn't dangerously hot, but its still hotter than the "comfort zone".

Hmm. I hear people having mixed results with Speedfan. Maybe get the temp from your BIOS first and see how it compares. As has been said, though, 50C for an overclocked CPU is not bad at all.

1. Look in the BIOS.
2. Reseat the CPU fan and put new thermal paste on.
3. Buy a new cooler for your processor, or try lowering the voltage.

I didn't touch the voltage while OC'ing. Just the FSB.

And, as stated in the OP, I said that what I could do, besides buying an aftermarket HSF to lower cpu temps.

indeed... try running the same process with the sidepanel taken off,.. does it get a lot cooler? because if so, you might want to look how to improve the airflow in yout case

You said your processor usage varies a lot, but was at 50% at the time? Is it constantly above say 10%? If so, you might have spyware or just some software that's causing issues. Last weekend I noticed one of my cores was stuck on some process, thus also raising my CPU's temp as it was working 100%.

Id say definently try improving airflow. My old case ran my processor (with an after market cooler) 50c idle and Mb was at 40c idle. I changed the case (bc there was no way to improve airflow in that crap case) tied up wires and installed 2 more $1 fans and my processor runs at 17c idle and Mb is at 30c idle.

Air flow can improve temps a lot. and itll cost you at most $5 for some normal fans. If you dont want to do that id say you could always try and reaply the thermal paste and reseat the hs and fan.

Processors can take a lot of heat. For example I was building a celeron pc (not mine all they needed was internet) and i guess somehow the stock hs wasnt put on correctly bc i started up the computer and it shut down after a minute. Started it up again and checked temps in bios. It was running at 100c. Shut it down reaplyed thermal paste and reseated hs and its back down to 45-50c

A drop from 50C to 17C? What is the temperature in your room? That sounds more like a faulty sensor than anything else...

no its a good sensor. Its just that case had basicly no airflow. Had one fan in the back and a fan in the front that did no good bc there was no vent. New case has a fan on the top two on the back and 2 on the front plus the aftermarket cooler is Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro and using OCZ Ultra 5+ Silver Thermal Compound. All that was already instaled in the old case. The cooler was just pumping out more heat into an already hot case. So the heat was going nowhere. Plus i keep my room pretty cold. I dont like heat all that much. Like if i turn off my ac itll go up to around 20-25c for the processor. but no the sensor works fine.

Heh. I don't know any CPU that runs at 17C unless it is liquid cooled, but whatever. lol :)
got mine down to 8C before, not liquid (it was -4F{-20C} outside, so i took it out in the 3ft deep snow and ran it with the voltage at 1.25V) :D

the temps probably around 60f but the ac is across the room from my pc. If you dont believe me ill take a screen shot of the program when i get home from work. using the asus pc probe II

AND on a P4. Pentium 4's run hot, usually more than 35C idle, but more like 40C+ idle.

Sure, a screenshot of your ASUS probe, as well as one of Speedfan, and take a picture of the BIOS... lol, if you want to.

Yeah i know. Ive had trouble with them in the past (thats why i switched from the stock intel hs) . Im telling you. This case has some really good airflow and the after market cooler dosent blow the air out into the case. It goes straight out the back. Check it out on newegg. I said the type of cooler earlier in this thread. The hs and fan are right next to the exaust fans in the back and then the hs fan blows the air through the hs and right out the exaust. But i really dont care if u all believe me. Im not looking for friends on this forum. I use it for ideas and advice.
