yeah the title says it all. Compaq Presario with 2.1ghz AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-64 with 3 gb ram, nvidia geforce 8200m g
right now the cpus are running at 59 degrees Celsius and the gpu is at 76 degrees. if i do anything slightly intensive (not even gaming. like youtube or something) or put my laptop on carpet or anything my gpu temp shoots up to 90-100 degrees. is there something defective or is it just bad design? or is this normal and i am looking like a total idiot?

I know some laptops have horrible design and they will just overheat that fast. My old (very old) toshiba overheats so much that it just turns off. A simple 12 dollar cooler for underneath it fixed the problem though.

That is insane that the core's have such different temps, because yes, they are on the same chip. What software are you using to read the temps? If you're not using PC Wizard or HWMonitor, I'd suggest one or the other. Confirm the heatsink is clean and not full of dust. Confirm the fan(s) are running correctly and able to spin freely. Also confirm Cool and Quiet is working correctly. You may even wish to get a program such as SpeedSwitchXP and lock the computer at it's lower speed. It should help your temps and normally there isn't that much of a decrease in performance (or if you're using Vista, just use Power Save)

firstly my os is Ubuntu, and I am using the Sensors-applet plugin for temps. also, that only happened once while using some random app that probably just sucked at load balancing. I am going to get a cooling mat or something soon. I would like to open up the case and check out heatsinks and stuff but this is a relatively new machine and I am worried about warranty.
Finally, at what temperature should I freak out and shut down the computer?

alright update time... i have upgraded to the amd64 edition of ubuntu, i bought a cooling mat, and my temps are generally under control. (now is not a good example of this because as i type this, i am downloading a large disc image and handbrake-ing a movie. cpu1@96deg, cpu2@89, and gpu@98) but generally i get reasonable temps. i think the main problem is that i am addicted to compiz, and it makes even the simplest tasks like window managing graphics intensive... :P
well thanks for the advice, the cooling mat helps a lot
