hotmail not loading

Hi there, and thank you for taking a look at this post.
I have a roommate who's laptop is not working properly. I have done some work to make it work better, by downloading firefox and replacing Norton which was no longer working because it was expired with AVG free version. Before doing this most websites would not load, saying that there was a security risk. After installing firefox several websites required special permission to open, but I allowed the websites and now they load, except for windows live and hotmail. When I try to open windows live login, it says that there is no secure connection and can't load the website. I also did a SMART test with Speed fan and it said that there was some read errors on the hard drive, but I don't know if this is the problem or not. Any ideas how to fix this problem? A reformat wouldn't be too hard since he doesn't have anything on the computer and won't need much installed after a reformat, but I don't want to spend the time doing that unless it's the last resort. Thank you.

The laptop has an I3 processor and is running windows 7.

If you are getting SMART errors then the HDD needs to be replaced. I would first refer to this thread to do a full scan to determine if this is the case.

If the drive does not need replaced then refer to the following thread to perform some malware/adware scans on the machine.

The underlying issue most likely is the drive itself but its very possible that the OS is filled with malware and should run malware scans according to the link given above.
