I suspect its your browser causing the issue. Try using a different one. Have you ran a malware scan on your system lately?

Your hosts file is located at

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Open the file labeled hosts, open it using notepad and you'll see a log similar to this.

Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

If you see any entry besides local host then most likely you have a hijacked hosts file unless you are running a special hosts file to keep the malware off your systems. Open the hosts file up and copy and paste the contents back here.

Another option would be to open internet options, click on the advanced tab, and click on both of the reset buttons to reset IE back to defaults.

Then its fine. It hasn't been hijacked. I would reset IE next by clicking on both reset buttons on the advanced tab in internet options.

Did you go into the advanced tab in internet options?

Did you click on these 2 reset buttons?

What $ files are you talking about?

Try using another browser just to see if you get the same problem. If so, then it could still be an issue with your PC. I doubt it will be Hotmail, as there would be a lot of users complaining about this.

Also, try installing IE 8 to see if it occurs there. I know that there were some issues with IE9 when it was rolled out initially. Maybe run a Windows Update to see if there are any service packs for IE9.
