One way to prevent an infection like in the article is to NEVER use file sharing programs! They are the fastest way to catch a virus of this sort (and many other viruses). And also make sure your system has all the necessary OS patches installed. Being up-to-date on OS patches can prevent quite a few viruses, like the ones discussed in that article.
Actually your far more likely to get a virus from all those ads/adult ads anymore then any p2p client. Your next "risk" is p2p type like limewire/kazaa those types. Far as torrents go any established site your risk of a virus is pretty minimal if its more then 5 days old. Also torrent has many LEGAL uses so don't throw it in with the illegal clients because a few abuse it. Many games update via the torrent protocol / distribute demos etc.
I wouldn't worry about it though.....most of those viruses are either made by the same people selling you the AV/Firewall or will be patched before it becomes to much of a issue. Even if they fail programs like Maleware Bytes / Spybot have talented programmers that are better at their job then most major companies so they will catch them.
So don't worry....you will NEVER be secure so no use worrying over it
I never get any virus', trojans, hijackers ect with file share clients. However twist86 is right, pronz popups WILL GET YOUR MACHINE INFECTED. Probably just as much as the girls featured in the ads.
Even better is they say that in win7 this is addressed and fixed, but I read an article with in the last 2 months from tech republic that said otherwise. They actually went as far to say that as long as drivers are allowed access to the windows kernel, there will always be a need for security software and while not many exploits take advantage of it, that doesn't mean they won't in the future. Also, how does any security software tell if a driver is valid or not, or hijacked or not?
Windows needs to seriously get rid of their old and busted monolithic OS model, and I really hope they do.
