How can I block Internet Games?

I don’t play games and from what I’ve heard they are the fastest way to get viruses and malware. I have no idea of what sites are safe or not. My grandson was playing Happy Wheels yesterday and I made him quit because I don’t know if it’s OK. He also loves Minecraft.

He is only 9 yrs old and I wouldn’t mind letting him play as long as I don’t have to worry about my computer being destroyed.

They really aren't first of all.

Second, if you are worried, download malwarebytes, or another antimalware program.

19/20 of those sites are absolutely fine.

Minecraft is a downloaded games, you can't get viruses from it

I'd probably consider a different source of information, although some of the 'multi game installers' come with a decent amount of adware.

Thanks, I don’t know anything about it, but all the people at work who are gamers are always complaining about different virus and malware on their computers and I also hear on a talk radio about it. I don't know why my coworkers have so many problems.
Anyway I just ran my antivirus program and it didn’t find anything. I guess I should run Malwarebytes.
So do you think I should let him play Happy Wheels?

What website is it on? Was there any software download required to play it?

I don't know. I just came in and found him playing the game. He doesn't know what he did only that he typed in games and pick something. I also did a disk cleanup and deleted everything I could find in the FireFox downloads.

I discovered that when searching for sites, my Antivirus software shows a green check mark for safe sites and a big red X for sites not safe.

There were a lot more green check mark than red X's so I told him not to click on anything in red.

There shouldnt really be any problems with any of the sites just make sure you have a reputable anti-virus program and malware-bytes. They should block or stop the website, virus download, if you click on something you shouldnt. Install add blocker for firefox, chrome etc should block the adverts.

if your worried i would just limit him to a safe site for flash games. Just scan it every so often with both programs to ensure if there is any malware it is removed. Maybe even set his own user up on windows without admin so he cannot download anything without your permission.

My younger sister used to play happy wheels a while ago on her laptop, she didnt have any problems with it.

Use Sandboxie. Problem solved. I added a blog entry here about Sanboxie. http://blog.************.net/?p=42

If you want to use Sandboxie and need help they have a forum and you can ask here.

I really don't think those games will be a problem though. What browser is he using? If it's Firefox or other Mozilla based browser you could install the addon Noscript. Then once you restart your browser disable it to allow basic protection against certain threats while be not so cumbersome to use. But if Noscript blocks something it's all on the user to not allow it.

I use Bitdefender Free which is pretty good. I would scan often with Malwarebytes, Super Antispyware and ADwcleaner.

Keep your plugins updated, Flash, Silverlight and Java, etc.

Thanks for the info, Agent Smith

I have fire fox with Bitdefender Total Security. I think it works pretty well, but there is this guy on the radio that says none of those programs are any good if you let the Virus and malware on to the computer by hitting the allow button.

I didn't know about Silverlight and actually I don't even know what it is and only that it is on my computer.

Anyway I can’t watch my grandson all the time and can only trust that he will do the right thing after informing him what not to do.

Depending on you're computer provider and how much time you wish to invest or how much you're grandson is on you're computer you can make a second account that has 0 admin rights on it and you can use controls to block certain sites.

Use TrendMicro Internet Security. It has loads of parental controls and helicopter-mom-monitoring-crap that you can activate. I activate the controls when I have friends over (because Calvin has the best gaming PC on the block and we ALL want to use it) and they work wonderfully. You can even set a passcode for it as well.

This has me so nervous that I guess I'm going to have to buy a computer game and install it on my computer if I can only find one that everybody likes.

I have to set here and watch them because I've caught them trying to download stuff and don't know what they've done so far. There are two of them on two different computers right now.

Look buddy, calm down. With a good antivirus, your covered. Don't flip out or be a helicopter parent.

Downloading stuff is fine, as long as they tell you.

Its your job to educate yourself about what they are doing. Ask them to explain it or Google it. Or tell us

You're 13 hehehe.. But true, running the files should be your issue. Avast! antivirus also has some tools that scan your downloads and delete programs if they trigger an alarm.

Best way to protect yourself is to have them use a computer with no personal information. Not one bit.

My parents did a similar thing. I only downloaded stuff like Minecraft mods. So I explained to them, and let them know before I installed anything

Get your grandson a computer from a garage sale or Craigslist. Then he'll have his own computer to screw around with, and if he damages anything, it will be HIS computer and not Grandpa's. :D

Edit: This is also my 500th post!!! :)
