PC probably died, how can i check if my battery has power?

since yesterday night i my laptop crashed. Usualy it should take time to shut down after it gets to hot or when it runs out of battery power. This time it didn't and it shut down right away. It looked allot like i pulled the power cord out of a running desktop PC. Since then there is no single reaction when i want to turn my laptop on. I noticed that my laptop charger broke. and since i can't get a proper charger i want to know how i can check if my battery still has power. It is likely that my computer died but i want to know this for sure since my exams are this month and i need a new computer as fast as possible. I cant use a VO meter to witch is annoying Dx. But checking if the computer should be quite simple. If the battery has power it means that my computer died. and if the battery is out of power i need to bu ya new charger. Is there a way to check my battery power? and if it is not possible to check this, can i get a checklist to know if my PC is broken?

Already allot of thanks for the help!

Some laptop batteries will have a button you can push on them to show the current level of charge; whether yours does is hit-or-miss. How did your charger break? Loose wire, frayed wire, damaged plug receiver port, physical damage to the unit?

From what you're describing, my guess would be just a drained battery.

HWMonitor will show you what the current capacity, maximum capacity, and designed capacity of your battery.

the charger just broke. And the reason why i think it is broken is becouse of two reasons. i smelled smoke when the computer crashed and with the little power that should be in the battery i should at least be managed to get the power button light on. Do note that i used a cheap universal charger instead of the charger used from HP since that one broke some months ago.

the problem is solved. both my laptop and charger are dead. what seemed to have happened is that my universal charger just gave up. it has a auto volt check mechanism and after it broke the voltage became to high for my computer to handle. the power supply in my laptop broke this way. The reviews on my charger were very good but i seemed to have a really rare occasion where a charger breaks down along with my computer. Learned from this that i should always buy the charger that was made for my laptop :(.

Unfortunately sometimes you learn he hard way :good:

Also, don't buy HP next time ;)

Some people don't like Dell, some people don't like Toshiba, Travis just probably doesn't like HP;)

Really though, every big box brand will have it's fanboys, just as it will have those that would never even consider buying something from them. Every company has duds, either an entire product line, or individual systems. Simplest way to pick something out is to start with a certain price range and compare different brands/models until you either 1-find the perfect system for your needs, or 2-find a happy medium between price/performance.

youre stating me not to buy HP but can i know why? so far i have bad experience with acer and packed bell.

Because HP puts out crap. Total crap. Johnb35 would agree with me. I have piles and piles of dead HP's at work. They still haven't gotten better over the last 5 years when they really had issues. The only HP's I support are the business grade EliteBooks.

Dell Latitudes are also the way I sway. Along with Lenovo ThinkPads. ASUS is also a good reliable brand.

so far i havnt had a realy bad experience with them. exept for the loud noise and heat it produses. but i'll build my own pc next time since desktops are more priceworthy and i dont take my computer to other plases. Allot of thanks for the help tough :D
