How Can I Check The Performance of My PC?

Good Morning Everyone -

I have what I hope will be a pretty simple question. The office where I work has several dozen computers. I need to poll our staff to see if there are any that need upgrading, but I don't want to just come right out and ask everyone "Hey, is your computer slow?". If I go that route I'll get 24 e-mails saying "Yes! Can I get a new one?" Our machines are pretty new, so I know they can't all be bad... I just need some basic questions I can ask staff to determine if they really have a problem that I need to check out.

Does anyone know of some simple stuff I can look at to give these computers a "check up"? I don't want to make any changes to them just yet, I just want to know what to look for to see if the computers are too slow.

Thanks!!!

Nicole

Hi :)

Well, if the computers are doing the jobs they're needed for then, they're fine, but if they're struggling then they could need an upgrade.

We can't really say if they need an upgrade or not, What are the computers used for?

Hello!

Welcome to Computer Forum!! :)

Anyway, one way to find out is probably to check the specification of the system that they are using. Just for a guideline, my computer here at work has the following specification:

Intel Pentium P4 1.70GHz
512MB RAM
NVidia Vanta/Vanta LT
Windows XP SP2

This computer works fine for the normal word processing and web browsing.

Hope this helps. :)
Cheers

Hi
A difficult question to answer, as been said before it depends on what they are used for.

As the machines are fairly new then for word processing/spreadsheets and database they are probably fine. If anyone is doing any CAD work then an upgrade in memory and a faster CPU may help, also a larger monitor with a graphics card that can handle a bigger resolution.

The best upgrade (if they don't already have one) would be to a TFT monitor which is easier on the eyes than some of the older monitors that have low refresh rates.

If they play games most of the day then they all want an upgrade. :P

First of all, thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated!

The computers are used for some web browsing, e-mail, and word processing, but the majority of the work is in our database of clients. It's a pretty hefty program. All the computers are networked to a server, and the database runs off our server. It's a lot of data entry, reporting, etc.

Everyone has a very new, very nice 17" flat panel monitor.

Anyhow, hope this info gives some idea of what I'm looking for.

Thanks again!

Having a nice new monitor doesnt help us that much though because the sowest of computers could have a nice shiny monitor. Try to find out the processor and the speed along with ram would be a start
