hi, iv bought a laptop and im new to laptops and need to know how i can connect to the internet using wireless, i have a desktop pc and use a bt home hub 1.0 with a wired connection. anyone tell me how i can connect? thankyou

Is the laptop fairly new? If it is then it most likely already has a wireless card built-in, so then all you would need to buy is a wireless router (can be found at Best Buy or similar stores, as well as online (cheaper)). From there all you would need to do is connect the modem to the wireless router, and then your desktop PC would connect to the wireless router as well using the same ethernet cord you are using now.

so i buy a wireless router, connect that to the BT Home hub and then thats it? considering my laptop has wireless built in?

Yes, theres some light setup involved for the wireless router, but nothing super difficult. You will want to secure your connection.

how do i connect the wireless router to the home hub? isit by USB? then does the wireless router have bluetooth which the wireless laptop will detect

The wireless router connects using networking cable, just like your modem connects to your desktop pc right now. Your laptop will connect via wifi not bluetooth.

Your BT modem should have an ethernet port (looks like a large telephone jack), you would connect your wireless router to the modem using that port via a standard ethernet cable. Technically there's no real setup needed, however it is strongly recommended that you setup wireless security and change the SSID if you live in a populated area.

Easily do this.

1. Buy a wireless router/modem
2. Buy another cable exactly like the one that connects from your desktop to your current modem.

3. Plug the new cable you just bought and have 1 end inside the new wireless modem and the other end plugged into your old modem and if your old modem has only 1 port that can fit that cable pull out the current one plugged into it then plug the one you plugged out which is your desktop into the new modem as they tend to have 2-4> ports

But heres question [-0MEGA-] does the connection automatically bridge?

thankyou for helping me everyone, but just one more thing, the home hub has 2 ethernet ports i use one for family desktop pc, one for xbox live and il need another for the wireless router, any ideas? like filters? for 2 connections

or does anyone know if bt home hub 1.0 has wireless connection (wifi)?

or if i bought bt home hub 2.0 would that be better?

There is no bridging needed.

You would only use one ethernet port on your modem, it would go from the modem to the wireless router. Most wireless routers have 4 ethernet ports, so you can connect your desktop PC, XBox, etc.

I don't know which ones do and don't, but honestly you would be better off simply buying a wireless router, since they would be cheaper then upgrading your existing modem to one that includes a built-in wireless AP.
