How can I make AVI file from VHS?

I have some VHS video tapes.
Then, it's said that the VCR will disappear soon.
So, I wanna make AVI files from the VHS video tapes.
What devices do I need? and what should I do?

You need a capture card. This is basically what I have, and I love it. However, it captures to MPEG2. I prefer this because you can burn the files straight to a DVD and play them in any standard DVD player.

There are many other capture cards avaliable with different feature sets and price ranges.

Grab either a TV tuner card with avi in, throw it in your pc, and record is what I did.
EDIT-He beat me. But the hauppauge cards are very nice indeed. I have the pvr 500, which is kind of like 2 150s into one.
