How can i network 2 computers together?

any computer can ping itself. even if the firewall is up, it can still test itself. Also you dont need a default gateway. but you need a crossover like people have been saying. Without it you cant or will not get a connection if you are skilled enough, you can make one by searching how to do else you have to get one. Once they are connected, ping is your best friend, ping the other computer and if you get a reply, you have a connection, else, you are doing something wrong. also try turning off the firewall. i dont think they interfere but i have not tried it recently

I also just found out that there are incompatability problems if your XP machine does not have servide pack 2, which it doesnt.

XP has IPv4, even Win98 does. You're not referring to IPv6 are you?

You know you can just hook the two computers up via ethernet cable and run the "Network Setup Wizard" in the Control Panel, right?

Thats because it only lists IPv4, so by saying only TCP/IP it's implying that it's based on the IP4v standard.
