how can i replace an new hdd with an old hadd whichhas a different plug-inconnection?

my hdd is fried and i tried to use the hdd of my old laptop. i have a usb case and connected it to my laptop and it found it but couldnt resume windows. can this problem be solved if i plug it properly where the damaged hdd used to be or would it be the same as connecting it via usb?
i changed the boot order too. to usb.
any thoughts?

Also what can i do about my broken hdd? i bought a usb case for it as well but no laptop can find it. seems to be a mechanical problem rather than a software problem.
thanks!

Your old hard drive is junked since it's a mechanical failure. You can probably get it repaired but it will cost a fair amount.

You generally can't boot the same windows install on different hardware. That's not to say it cannot be done, it can and I have, but it's more trouble than it's worth. If you are just trying to get the laptop running again the simplest thing to do is buy a new drive for it (make sure you get the right type) and install windows to it.

hi there,
i did intall windows xp again using my new computer with the old hdd connected via usb (the old hdd is fine, the hdd of my new laptop is broken)
but its still not working. i quick resarted xp and it copied all the data from all 5 cds. but when i restart the computer the xp sign comes up but it doesnt boot properly. it says resume windows normally (or in safe mode etc etc.) and when i clck yes it restarts again and the same thing comes up.
coud the poblem be that i have connected the hdd through the usb and didnt connect it from the bottom side? in bios it still cant detect any hdd. maybe because the only hdd that is connected to the comp is the one through usb.

and if i was to buy a new hdd what model would it have to be? can i use any hdd that has the same connection as the broken hdd had?
thanks alot
