how can linux be free?

why have they made it freesource?
and what is the real meaning of freesource? (is it because the users can edit or change something in lunix, make it better?)

source code is free to the public to whoever want to customize their own not like microsoft's codes are closed source that you have to buy their software.

If someone develops a new program, or patch for running Windows compatable software on a Linux system, or an improvement for a specific distro that can be submitted and see approval for general use in any newer revision. That's why they call it an "open" type of OS. Originally Linux was based on the UNIX/Novell platform which goes back decades before the first desktop model pcs were introduced with the exception of the 8086s and 8088s.
