I was playing around with an older 200Gig HDD I had sitting around and decided to hook it up to my PC via a USB adapter setup that can hook up to either SATA drives or older units. Initially my PC wouldn't recognize the drive, but then I remembered the pin and took it out completely, after which the drive showed up at last. Only problem is that my PC states that it's 127gig, when in actual fact it's a 200gb unit! I mean, I know that an OS system can use some of the resources when you use a HDD as your primary unit, but as this one was connected up as an external unit virtually all of the 200GB should have been available. So where did the remaining 73GB disappear to? I vaguely remember reading somewhere or other than the placement of the pin can have a bearing on size recognition in older versions of Windows like XP, but as I have Windows 7 on board that shouldn't be an issue. Could it be that it's a non-SATA drive?
Also, I don't think it's a case of it being damaged as I never actually got around to using this particular HDD - I bought it a few years back at a time when I was thinking of using it to back up an older computer, but never got around to it before upgrading to my previous PC. So the HDD is essentially new to all intents and purposes.
