How do backups work.

Hi I have all my movies and pictures on a separate hard drive and my main hardrive just deals with windows and installed programs.

I used windows restore recently, thankfully I was able to access windows in safe mode in order to do that.

So do I just have no use for backups since my second hard drive is just for storage and not at risk,

or is there a way to backup my hard drive with windows on it and all the programs I have in an "installed" state?

Any hard drive is at risk for not working at any moment. It's a mechanical device. You can back it up to an external or another hard drive. Some people use raid 1 to mirror a drive in case of failure.

Any data you value have at least two copies of it on separate hard drives or storage devices. If you really value the data make three copies of it.
