How do I connect this new Lenovo to the net??

So i'm waiting on cooler weather to break to put in my new Lenovo B550 all in one in the small back room area I recently finished. I don't want to put in a window unit to just have to take it back out.

Wanting to see this thing I unboxed it last night. My current setup is Exede satellite as I live in the sticks. It connects to my several year old Dell with what looks like a big click in phone cable type thing. Yes, my terminology rocks i'm sure lol.

At any rate the only connection of that type on the new pc appears to be some kind of network. I'm assuming anyway as it shows a pic of 2 pc's over 1.

I would prefer a wired hookup if possible. Any ideas what to do here?

I was just hoping to find someone that might know the answer easily that would save me the trouble of having a satellite installation guy come out and hand me a bill and/or who knows how much time on the phone being on hold and then having some young tech guy trying to explain all this to farmer joe.

Thank you, even if you don't know the answer. I'm sure it's simple but this isn't my thing.

It sounds like you have your PC connected directly to your satellite modem, using an ethernet cable, which looks like a large phone cord.

All you should have to do is purchase a wireless router (I know you want wired, and you can still use this but you have the option for wireless down the road), plug your modem into that, and then you typically have 4 ethernet ports that you can plug in your old PC, and your new Lenovo.

Thanks for trying to get me on track. I have a serveral year old linksys but not sure if it works, where the cd for it went, etc etc. That's beside the point. You are correct as there are 4 ethernet(thanks lol) ports on the rear. But there is only one ethernet port on the Lenovo for the networking thing. So is that where I will plug it in at or do I need some other kind of connection?

I tried plugging in the ethernet directly from the modem into the levano and that didn't work.

I originally got the router to share the net with someone else here as the satellite guy said it wouldn't slow down the downloading if we were both on it at the same time. Boy was he wrong. Fortunately I don't have to deal with that now.

In theory, all you need to do is have the Modem > Router, and then Router > PC 1 and router > Lenovo. As for why it didn't work switching the cable between your PC and new Lenovo, I can't say for sure, but it could be that your PC requires a static IP which was set manually, or the modem only works with one MAC address (device), and you need to call up your provider.

Having a router to share the internet between devices in itself won't slow it down, but you have a fixed download and upload speed, so if one person is downloading, it will slow the other person down.
