How do I delete the main partition?

My new computer came with the 32-bit version of Vista installed. I wanted to switch to the 64-bit version, but I wanted to test it first before deleting the 32 install. So I created a partition on the hard drive and installed Vista 64 there. It's working great, and I'm going to stick with it and delete the Vista 32 partition and merge them back into one. Unfortunately, Vista won't let me format or delete that partition. What do I need to do to delete the Vista 32 partition and merge them into one?
 
there is gparted, however i have had a bad experince with it (lets just say i was happy it came with a backup partition :D) it could be my computer had problems partitioning before. but it should work. you just need to download it and burn it to a disk.
 
Hmm. Not sure I want to try it if that was your experience with it! :)

I booted to the Vista disk and started into the normal install process. I deleted the partition and then rebooted. It then couldn't find my other OS. I had to go in and run repair install. It found and fixed my 64-bit install, but it restored everything to the partition I just deleted! I guess I should have formatted it rather than just deleting it, right? Is this what I want to do? Is there a better way to do this?
 
Do you have anything you need on the x64 partition? If not the easiest thing to do is just delete it all and repartition the whole thing.

Yes. I have everything on the x64 partition and don't have a backup of it yet. I really don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling the OS and software.
