True, but a bit of a waste of a perfectly good hard drive...

Is 'Mr Hammer' the only way. I only have a brief idea of what my son has infected my work computer with! I don't want to lose my job!

Where exactly is the location of the work computer? e.g. is it networked in an office somewhere? And are you looking to wipe the whole hard drive? Because if so then you'd lose the operating system etc. If you're only looking to remove the files, it's more long winded to make sure you've erased everything relevant.

No, the computer is at home. It is only used there, but is still works property. I'll erase all hard drive data if necessary. I can just reinstall the programs

Seriously, just uninstall limewire, and delete anything your son may have downloaded. The company has not reason to search the computer unless you give them a reason to search it. do they have some policy that they have to search every computer, every month or something?

Or you can use Killdisk Free version to delete everything on the harddrive, and just reinstall the OS and programs if you really want.

Make sure you locate the Windows disk and serial before you do. Unless you know where to look to find all the downloaded files it may be easier to start again, so long as you back up all relevant files beforehand.

Uninstalling Limewire may work so long as the files haven't been moved anywhere.

I'm surprised Kill Disk wont download. I'm in Plymouth and it worked fine. I posted the link to Eraser 5.7. Is that not suitable?

Just use Eraser, it's free and it supports multipass 0,1 and random formats. If thats not enough for you, you're employer must have a lot of money to track down porn on it's employees' computers, in which case just burn the hard drive and get a new one :).

theres a simple magic trick you could always do...just take a very large magnet, wave it over the harddrive three times at exactly 12:00 midnight and...poof!

no, but seriously...removing it physically would not do a thing. its very difficult to erase things entirely, just because of the nature of hdds...a new drive would work, but that would be even fishier than deleting lots of stuff in the company's eyes...so, for one, i wouldnt worry about it too much, just try killdisk and you should be fine.

oh wow...i didnt even read all four pages, i was too anxious to give a reply. oh well.

Hard Drive Wipe

Its actually quite simple to be honest really, heres how I do it-

-First find out what file format your hard disk is (either FAT32, or NTFS) you can find this out by going to- My Computer then clicking on your hard drive and in the details section on the left hand side it will either say FAT32, or NTFS

-Start up your PC with the WinXP install disk in the drive

-When it comes up with a screen saying 'Welcome to windows' press F10 to take you to the recovery console

-When it asks for it, enter your administrator password if you dont have one, simply just press enter and it should bypass it

For a FAT32 hard drive type the following commands-

map
ENTER
format c:
ENTER
y
ENTER

your computer will then start re-formatting the hard disk and as a consequence wipe all the data from it.

When it has finished formatting, type exit then press enter to restart your computer.

For NTFS Hard Drives-

map
ENTER
format c: /fs:ntfs
ENTER
y
ENTER

your computer will then start re-formatting the hard disk and as a consequence wipe all the data from it.

When it has finished formatting, type exit then press enter to restart your computer.

If my way of doing it for a NTFS hard disk does not work then use the same one as with the FAT32 drive commands

Then, begin the installation process of Windows XP

Please let me know if this works,

I highly doubt that your company would bother to search your computer, I mean, seriously, how much extra time do they have on their hands? just delete the crap your son downloaded and run a few virus scans. If you're really concered use the free version of killdisc and then reinstall the OS and all the other programs it came with.
